Model 70 Stock ID Needed #19033690 12/21/23 Joined: May 2010 Posts: 9,422 Likes: 2 Northern MN 1 160user OP Campfire Outfitter OP 160user Campfire Outfitter 1 Joined: May 2010 Posts: 9,422 Likes: 2 Northern MN I picked up a "custom" pre-64 model 70 in 280 today and I am looking for some help with ID on the stock. Is this an old Bansner? I am always looking for factory wood stocks!

I had it apart today and it was a miserable SOB to get apart. It is bedded tight and you can hardly get any play to make it come out. It appears to be glass inside or a glass composite. I know NOTHING about these composite stocks so that is why I asked you fine gents. I am always looking for factory wood stocks!

In the barrel channel? It is bedded the first couple of inches ahead of the recoil lug if that is where it used to be. I am always looking for factory wood stocks!

I think around $200

I am awalnut guy but really wanted a "foul weather" rifle and this one fell in my lap. I am always looking for factory wood stocks!

Interesting. Is the OP's stock like the ones they put on the older Winlites? Very close. The brown winlites don’t have this little step up though - like other browns.

Inside by the magazine well I saw what I would call fiberglass strands. The stock isn't a super lightweight by any means nor is the rifle. It is a nice stock but certainly not in the 16-24 ounce range. I am always looking for factory wood stocks!

That looks like a Brown to me. I've had a few of the Brown Winlites and a Pound'r on a pre-64 custom Featherweight and as soon as I saw the pic of the wrist/grip I thought Brown Precision.

I feel like the grip is more open on the mpi and the pg “cap” area a little more elongated but I have far less experience with them and if there were different iterations.

It's hard to see the step up at the bolt release in the OP picture. All of my McMillan Winlites say Winchester on the pad too and the OP said his has a Decelerator pad on it. Not sure if the bolt handle would line up perfectly, or not, as a "drop in".

After looking at a bunch of my browns - and some other stocks that have come up since this original thread - I’m going to change my response and agree with 338. I think that this is most likely an mpi; not brown.

Just put an old gloss Leupold or Burris on it. What's wrong with the Zeiss that is on it? Leupld DD's generally always work, for mounts and rings. Or steel weaver style mounts, like Leupold PRW/QRW or modified Warne mounts, and Burris Zee rings. Looks like a nice rifle. Formerly a std wt, probably about a 1961. When I got my 338wm in the Brown PoundR, the stainless barrel was left like yous, I had it cerakoted, then painted the stock and added a red pachmayr. Very nice. That Johnboy does some nice work. For coating, maybe Eddie Fosnaugh? I have been very happy with the few cerakote jobs I've had done, but I had a local guy do mine.
