I picked up a "custom" pre-64 model 70 in 280 today and I am looking for some help with ID on the stock. Is this an old Bansner?

It has a Decelerator pad on it if that helps at all with ID.

It's a long story but it was built by a long time gunsmith/handgun manufacturer down in the MSP area for a friend of his. Building a model 70 in 280 has been on my mind for a while and I stumbled into this one. The underside of the barrel has some proof marks and a twist rate but no other marks to ID the barrel other than the caliber.

Nice, you'll have to let us know more specifics of the rifle, and also enlighten us with a range trip. How heavy is the rifle? Looks a lot like a Brown Precision stock to me, except it does not have a cheek piece. Did the old ones have them? My PoundR's have the cheek piece.

Thank you all! I had it apart today and it was a miserable SOB to get apart. It is bedded tight and you can hardly get any play to make it come out. It appears to be glass inside or a glass composite. I know NOTHING about these composite stocks so that is why I asked you fine gents.

They made a version without the cheek piece; one of my blanks sans CP is labeled “AK.” I would assume they could be ordered as a “pounder” just as the others, but I don’t know that for 100%.

Where would it be labeled? In the barrel channel? It is bedded the first couple of inches ahead of the recoil lug if that is where it used to be.

in the early 90's i got brown precision stocks for pre 64 70's with and without cheek piece and they came with no pad and I put black decellerators on all of mine. they were a lot cheaper back then. I think around $200

It wouldn’t. That labeling is on the butt prior to the pad.

Of course it is. And the pads are glued on, not screwed I assume? Like I said, I don't know anything about these composite stocks. I am awalnut guy but really wanted a "foul weather" rifle and this one fell in my lap.

Very close. The brown winlites don’t have this little step up though - like other browns.

Well, this one has a dumping floorplate obviously, not a blind magazine. Inside by the magazine well I saw what I would call fiberglass strands. The stock isn't a super lightweight by any means nor is the rifle. It is a nice stock but certainly not in the 16-24 ounce range.

I'm gonna agree with AK and some others here. That looks like a Brown to me. I've had a few of the Brown Winlites and a Pound'r on a pre-64 custom Featherweight and as soon as I saw the pic of the wrist/grip I thought Brown Precision.

I’ll try to post a picture, but rarely are the Bansners this flat on the bottom of the pistol grip. They come out of the mold with a bit of a convexity; and unless someone really works on them, they usually maintain it.

Definitely a possibility. I feel like the grip is more open on the mpi and the pg “cap” area a little more elongated but I have far less experience with them and if there were different iterations.

The grip looks way fatter on the MPI. The thing I like about the Brown Precision stocks is their long slender grip. They are pretty comfortable to me.

It looks a lot like a McMillan Winlite.

I sure could go for some $2.50/gal gas and a mean tweet!

Similar, but winlite has no step up at bolt release and does have a step up forward of the ejection port - on both sides.

True. It's hard to see the step up at the bolt release in the OP picture. All of my McMillan Winlites say Winchester on the pad too and the OP said his has a Decelerator pad on it. I guess the pad could have been changed over the years though...

A pre 64 action would not go into a winlite stock without some work to line up the receiver bolts. Not sure if the bolt handle would line up perfectly, or not, as a "drop in".

Crazy price on that!

I still think the OP’s rifle has a less open grip and a smaller overall pistol grip profile than the MPI - but it could be the pic.

A full view from the OP and pictures of the inlet would help - if he ever gets time.

Nice rifle. Hopefully you bought it right. It's probably a shooter too.

Bringing this one back to the top. Life is a learning process, and I try my best to acknowledge when I’m incorrect. After looking at a bunch of my browns - and some other stocks that have come up since this original thread - I’m going to change my response and agree with 338. I think that this is most likely an mpi; not brown.

Are you sure now? I was in suspense. Waiting to know exactly what it is, and also a range report. Get on with it OP!! Going to the range doesn't take much time at all.. Just sayin..

Speaking of this stock I.D schidt, there is one on ebay right now that you may need to look at.

Ok, I won't bid on it then... Thanks buddy.. There is a good chance he will get it at a very reasonable price, if he can snipe it. Just a warning.. Hopefully he sees this.

That's how I got my Brown PoundR for $400, and the very nice Pacific Research for the same price.

I likely won't take it to the range until April. I have already changes scopes and mounts 3 times trying to find something I like before I start throwing Federal Premium 150's down range.

I likely won't take it to the range until April. I have already changes scopes and mounts 3 times trying to find something I like before I start throwing Federal Premium 150's down range.

Just put an old gloss Leupold or Burris on it. What's wrong with the Zeiss that is on it? Leupld DD's generally always work, for mounts and rings. Or steel weaver style mounts, like Leupold PRW/QRW or modified Warne mounts, and Burris Zee rings.

Looks like a nice rifle. Formerly a std wt, probably about a 1961. When I got my 338wm in the Brown PoundR, the stainless barrel was left like yous, I had it cerakoted, then painted the stock and added a red pachmayr. I always thought it looked unfinished, left how it was, but a guy could use it just like it is pretty easily.

Yes, I think the stock may need to go to John Boy for a paint job and try to figure out who to send the action to and have it coated.

Very nice. That Johnboy does some nice work. For coating, maybe Eddie Fosnaugh? I have been very happy with the few cerakote jobs I've had done, but I had a local guy do mine.
