Old Lang Syne a poem by Robert Burns Should old acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And old lang syne?
For old lang syne, my dear, For old lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For old lang syne.
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp, And surely I'll be mine! And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For old lang syne.
For auld lang syne, my dear, For old lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For old lang syne.
We twa hae run about the braes, And pu'd the gowans fine; But we've wandered mony a weary fit Sin' old lang syne.
For old lang syne, my dear, For old lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For old lang syne.
We twa hae paidled i' the burn, Frae morning sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roared Sin' old lang syne.
For old lang syne, my dear, For old lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For old lang syne.
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere, And gie's a hand o' thine! And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught For old lang syne.
For old lang syne, my dear, For old lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For old lang syne.

Auld lang syne, in case anybody wonders, is old (17th century) Scottish "old long since" what we'd now call "the good old days" and sing about "for old times' sake."
Nice, isn't it?

Ken...How many drunks have you heard try to sing that song withoput having a clue as to what the lyrics were?? or what they mean I don't think that I've ever heard anybody sing more than the first verse and the chorus: Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne! (Should old friends be forgotten and never remembered Should old friends be forgotten Or the good old days? For old times' sake, my dear, For old times' sake, We'll take a cup of kindness yet, For old times' sake.) I like the second verse, too: And there's a hand my trusty fiere, And gie's a hand o' thine And we'll tak a right guid willie waught, For auld lang syne. (And here's my hand, my trusted friend, And give me a hand of yours And we'll take a good drink (a toast) For old times' sake.) Like so many other things, it means a bit more when you know that it signifies more than "let's get drunk for the last time this year."
"Good enough" isn't.

When I think of New Years, I think of that song. I once went to New York City to work a New Years weekend in an intensive care unit as a traveling nurse for a little extra money. I heard an old German man sing that song on a street corner. I could not understand the language but recognized the tune to the song.

Happy New Years everyone. I don't think I will be able to find the computer tomorrow, much less be able to read the screen.

Happy New Year, Ken. Thanks for the translation. Never knew the meaning of the words, but I always seemed to feel the spirit of them. Mike
"Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing." Robert E. Howard
