Dunno. Shot a mulie doe with one a couple of years back. MV was only about 1650 fps, range was about 70 yards. Bullet didn't seem to expand much, just punched on through. Of course it went through the shoulders and broke her back too - so it sure put a quick end to the doe hunt that day. Not much of a mess, there was surprisingly little bloodshot meat. No bullet to recover, it's out there in the hillside somewhere, but the damage didn't look like it had expanded much.
Regards, Guy

Doesn't sound like it needed to. Shucks, they start out almost 1/2" in diameter anyway. Poke a couple half inch holes in your chest and see how long ya live.

The factory load gets around 1,300 fps. I've never used the factory load on anything so I don't know if the bullet expands at that velocity or not. I have shot quite a few deer with the bullet from my M1895 at 1,861 fps and they have shown a good exit that would have you believe the bullet is doing some expanding. I would say that the exits have less bloodshot meat and secondary damage than some higher velocity cartridges. I've never recovered this bullet from a whitetail. I shot a buck of around 180 pounds field dressed running toward me at 15 yards once. The bullet hit inside the front left shoulder and exited through the very last rib on the opposite side, and the exit was quite large. That exit involved that last rib being broken and splintered which probably accounted for a large part of the exit wound, but all in all, it was quite a hole out.
