I was piddling around on Gunbroker this morning trying to get a sense of what my action would be worth should I decide to sell it. Found this one
https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1027810574.

If that drilled and tapped action is worth anywhere near that amount, I would be shocked since I think it is way, way overpriced. Here's my unmolested action, just a few serial numbers higher, 604XX, than the gunbroker action. I know for sure its worth more than the Gunbroker action but I didn't think it was even worth as much as the asking price for the drilled and tapped one. What say you guys?

No receiver is worth $1,000.00, except for the H&H. Those generally get that. A standard, non drilled, or drilled pre war is only worth about $650-$800 at best. At least from what I've seen at collectors type gunshows. Online, it may be different. Especially if you look at pre64.com. That guy (Jason) charges too much on most of his things.

On a side note, I could have bought a pre war a few months ago for $650.00, and that was the whole rifle. The gunbroker listing is way too high. Keep an eye on it though, just to see if it sells. That may give you more of an idea.

I don't blame you for not wanting to drill and tap that one you have. That would be sacrilege to some. However, it can never really be returned to its original state. Take that for what it is worth.

I see you are wanting to trade for a D&T'd similar year action. There are plenty out there. The guys wanting to buy the action from you, seem to want it. You could always ask more like $1,000.00 for what you have, and see if you get any takers. If not, gradually lower your price. That's probably what I'd do.

An undrilled unmolested preWar action such as yours is easily worth $1,00.00. I know a few guys paid $900.00 for them every day of the week between 5 and 10 years ago. There are a lot of pristine preWars out there that have an extra hole or more in the receiver. Your action would at least double the value of their gun.

Yours is a later made one, looks like 1947. The ones really in demand are the earlier ones with the carbonum or bone and charcoal type finish, but that being said yours is from the era were optics when getting popular so there are probably more drilled 1947's out there than undrilled. So your's should still be an easy sell. DON'T DRILL IT!!! You would need to alter the bolt handle and also change the Safety out to be able to use a decent, modern scope.

You going to sell or build on that action TenX?, i can say that Claro Walnut stock i got from you to build a model 70 custom in 400 H&H mag remains stiff and strong as ever, great rifle that did a hell of a job with 400gr A-Frames at 2400 fps in Tanzania fall of 2020:

Gold medal Waterbuck, 236 yards off sticks.
Warthog, 167 yards off sticks.
Bedded Hartebeest bull, 238 yards prone.
Leopard, 77 yards out of blind.
Zebra, 287 yards prone.

Hippo and Buffalo taken with 577 Double, also did plenty of off camera testing with 400gr BBW #13 solids at 2400 fps on the large animals, phenomenal straight line penetration, your stock made a hell of a foundation for a fine lightweight plains game rifle that can be used on ALL game worldwide.

Glad to hear you are enjoying that piece of wood, it is a very nice stock with lots of striking figure. Looks like you have been putting it to a lot of good use.

I guess I'll end up selling the action, I can't think of a use I would have for it without being able to mount a modern scope.

Ten four Phil, yes, it's a great and great looking stick of walnut, sounds like that action would make a fine build for someone who wanted to mount a receiver peep and make a fine stalking rifle.
