Great story! Sounds very familiar as I grew up doing something very much like that. Our camp was on the Missouri side of the Ozarks. Ours involved the men of the church we attended.

Living out west, I can only dream of what it might have been like. Kind of like when I read Where the Red Fern Grows in Jr. High.

Looks like the old 39 A will have to make a trip out of the safe.

Used to be some big squirrel camps in East Texas when I was a young man. Ours was just out of Groveton in Davy Crockett National Forest. All the oldtimers are gone now and the rest of us scattered to the winds. I haven't shot a squirrel in 20 years. I hope to revive the tradition someday.

I love squirrel hunting so I enjoy the stories but I have never been on a squirrel camp trip with anybody ever. I'll be 59 in August. Small game and bird hunting is practically all the hunting that I have cared about. A few trips deer hunting didn't get me interested enough in that. When I was younger I did some squirrel hunting with friends but they lost interest in it so for many years I've hunted alone and grown to prefer that.

Camping in general I just don't care for; at the end of the day I want to be home.

I have hunted where he’s talking about a lot I grew up there it’s still a great place.Duck hunted there when Potlatch traded it to the refuge the boat ride in the dark every morning is something you never forget always feels like a miracle you made it and can’t wait to do it again tomorrow. My spot was called the taint hole because it was between two lakes.

A true story: The president of our deer camp lived next to an older couple. The man was getting up in years and his wife didn’t want him squirrel hunting alone. Our president told him to be ready at 5:30 am and he’d take him to our lease. He said when he got to Pap’s house, Pap was sitting on his front steps with his shotgun and gear beside him. Pap had his pocketknife out and was whittling on a pair of dentures. He asked Pap what he was up to. Pap said,” Mu damn teef don’t fit no more!” About that time his wife appeared at the front door and said, “Honey, you seen my false teeth anywheres? Yours are in the glass on the nightstand, but I can’t find mine nowhere’s!”

My brother said skinning a squirrel was like getting a toddler out of their winter clothes. We lived in Minnesota.

I loved eating them, thanks for the story.

Surprising how many people don't know how to skin a squirrel.

Good read, thanks for posting. I used to love hunting squirrels with my Grandfather when I was a young teenager. Now our hunt club has an annual squirrel hunt every year. Its a fun day.
