Went ahead and bought the Burris FF2 4.5-14x42. Had my doubts as I really liked the way the rifle handled with the lighter weight of the FF2 3-9x40 but the higher magnification is a better choice for the smaller sized 500 yard plates and the additional weight's no big deal on a range rifle. I'm going to try the 3-9 FF2 on a 22 RF. Should be interesting with the ballistic plex reticle. Thanks again to all for the info.

That 4.5-14x42 would work well on your 22lr, because of the AO. There might be a slight parallax issue with the 3-9x40 at 50 yards and less. But hopefully not too much of an issue. I run a similar Burris 4.5-14x42 on my 22's and like them... Not the FFII, but the AR specific AR556 and AR7.62 rifle scopes, with the C4 windplex reticle. They dial very well, so they work well on just about anything I put them on.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Most of the E1 have parallax set for 50 yards...just a thought. I actually like the E1s better then the FFII

Ended up selling the 4.5-14 to a guy that wanted it more than I did. Nothing wrong with the 4.5-14 but didn't seem to hit any better with it than I did with the FFII 3-9x40 and liked the rifle better with the 3-9 on it. Lost a little money on the deal but glad I gave it a try.

I’ve had a 4.5-14x42mm AO but always end up back at the 3-9x40mm BP. They just work and there is something nice about the simplicity of one scope on so many rifles.
That BP is super useful across cartridges.
