My youngest son had a co-working (SE Texas refinery) that is 3rd gen SE Texas. All he knew was whitetail from a blind. He and his wife are about to start a family (26 years old) and he always dreamed of a western hunt. He did some looking and decided guided bear hunt in New Mexico. After some more research (friggen engineers) the ability to shoot "far" intrigued him. He read up on it, YouTube, etc. He bought a Ruger American in 7mm PRC, a Vortex 3-15 Razor LHT and a number of boxes of Hornady's 175 gr ELD-X ammunition. The range near him goes to 600 yards. The combo shot extremely well. He shot a lot learning how to dial the scope and became very confident with his "kit". This guy owns one 7-08 and is not a "loony" at all. This morning my son texted me writing that Ethan took a bear at 620 yards. I know nothing more that what I wrote. I would like to play in that game shooting steel but there is not a place for me to shoot long range around me. The boy is pretty proud.

with the equipment and information available today, the hardest part of it most of the time is finding the space to shoot long.

Did you say, "shot a lot"? You mean he practiced? Unlike many, he has his head screwed on.

Good for him.

EdM, you reside in Idaho during the hot part of the year and say there's nowhere to shoot?

Yes. Not a lot of flat ground here 50 miles south of BC. I'm sure you know the area though...

Can you pick up some chilaquiles and bean dip from The Mecca?

That is a neat story, with a good ending. Practice & knowledge vs. just having a magical cartridge might have merit.

Long range shooting is fun but agree places to shoot are hard to find. Think ridge to yonder mountain side. Ya have to use painted steel as a trip to a paper target just to check it might be a 30 minute drive.

Not mountains buy any stretch, but know the drill. My target is dead center on yonder hillside just above the tops of the trees in the "holler". 850 yds. but a mile ride one way on an ATV.

No - Coeur d'Alene is as far north as I've been , I didn't know you lived that far north.

Good for him!

He did everything right it sounds. He read and self taught himself the principles and then went out and shot and shot and shot until he was proficient! My kinda guy. 👍🏼

I’d wish him good luck but a guy like that knows that HE makes his own luck. I’m sure he’s gonna have an impressive trophy room one day.

Is there clear cuts? My boys in/on Oregon coast can shot long ways on them clear cuts.
