I recently acquired a 1946 Winchester Model 70 in 270 wcf. It has a Redfield scope base and I’m guessing from some research a similar year Weaver k-2.5 scope. It seems the stock has been cut and I’m not sure but I think I might also be missing the hood for the front sight . The barrel does not indicate what contour it is. Serial number is 54xxx which indicates is a prewar ? I wanted to upload pics but it says the file size it to big.

Postimage, or Imgur.

As for your rifle, it's going to either be a 20" carbine model, a 24" std wt, or a 24" heavy barrel target model. Pics would help with this, if you want one of us to tell you for sure. The length of pull on your rifle should be from 13.5-13 5/8". The front hood should either be there, or not. So when you say you think it might "also be missing the front sight hood", I'm not sure what you mean. It's either there, or it isn't. Sounds like a 1946 to me, as you state, based on the serial #, so yes, that is considered a "pre war" model.

In your thread title, you ask for a "price check". As you probably know, that is near impossible without good pictures. Keeping in mind, originality, rarity, and condition are what dictates value. I look forward to seeing some pics of your 1946 model 70.

In that s/n range the bridge was likely not factory d&t for a scope base.
Looking forward to pics.

Clearly a full length barrel, and it is missing the hood for the front sight. Nice looking rifle, btw!

Stock does appear to be cut.

Nice rifle though.

Really cool rifle. I don’t have a “pre war “ but always think they are really cool.

Concurring a handsome specimen depicted of "Standard" weight barrel! Not a true "collector" but possibly in such nice condition, arising to a "stand-in temp" filling collector "prewar" hole. Speaking of which, either my bad eyes or your dyslexia...! From applicable pix you kindly provided, the serial looks to be "514xx", which per Win Collectors records puts the production date in '42. The butt pad and scope holes are presumptively non-original by "collector criteria". Otherwise, the rifle appears "original"! A milled-integral front sight ramp should also adorn the rifle. Last matter of concern re any vintage rifle in respect of vicissitudes of many decades, the confirmation of yet standard .270 chambering unaltered!

Congrats on that rifle!
My take!
Best!
