High cap and .30 cal iron sights........ I'd go with a .308 win battle rifle of some sort.

If sporting purpose, some euro auto (.308 or .30-06).

BTW, a 16" FAL Para is still a pig LOL

I had an AR 308 with several 20 round magazines and one 5 round magazine. Never had an issue with function.
I recently saw M1A tankers for sale. I believe you’d have a good selection of magazines for them too

I have had the Remington Models 740, 742 (they were both jammomatics. "Don't leave home WITH one" ha) I've also had a Model Four (270) a model 7400 (30-06) and a Model 750 Whelan Carbine. They were excellent and reliable rifles. So you could "try one of them out" with any 10rd magazines and if reliable, hey, use 165 Barnes or 200 Partitions. OR as mentioned, a Benelli that would shoot 3" Magnums. THEN, I will sell you this wad of Terminator 3" 12ga 850gr hard lead slugs! I have several of the "Tuskers" that shoot a 600gr hard lead. I've only shot the Tuskers in my Mod 870 WingMaster Magnum, yes, they kick...hard. I don't know about the Terminators.

I know it is not a .30-06 but for close up stuff and stopping power a .458 SOCOM will get it done. It fits in the AR platform and will accept high capacity mags that will work. It is single stack and I do not know for sure what mag it will take to get 10 rounds.

Lots of power in a portable package. Same gun in 450 Bushmaster is another viable option. Buffalo Bore loads some powerful loads for either one. A Ruger SFAR .308 looks intriguing as well. I’ve considered all these, as well as the compact M1A’s as a camp gun for Alaska.

Would a 16" M1 Garand work ? Tell Shuff you want to shoot 200 grain slugs out of it so he can drill the right size gas port.

This is what you need. One of my best friends hunts hogs in the cutover, brush, and swamps of south Georgia with this: Browning BAR Mk3 DBM

I've handled both of these and they're relatively light, and with the 18" fluted barrel, they're purposefully made to be very fast handling in close quarters. At the ranges you're talking about, with modern ammo, there's very little to no practical difference between the .30-06 and the .308. Plus with one of these, you get Browning reliability and a purpose designed and built rifle.

Garand was what popped into my head too. A consideration with that one though is the fairly narrow pressure band and velocity range that must be adhered too or run the risk of twanging the operating rod. That can be overcome to an extent with an adjustable gas valve but there would still be considerable tweaking of loads and adjusting the gun if smacking big bears up close with heavy premium bullets going as fast as practical is in the cards. I dunno, I'm not a "bear guy", but on the other hand wouldn't 8 shots quick of "standard" 150-165's at 2700-2800fps be good medicine?

The M1 Ball version using 173gr (+/-) hunting bullets would work quite well I'd imagine.

I suppose ten rounds beats five provided you have the time to use some. I've been watching the "I Was Prey" series on the Animal Planet channel and the last three episodes had two grizzly and a black bear attack along with their usual shark and alligator chewing. The one guy worked for the forest service and got between a sow and cubs and he didn't even have time to get his handgun out before the bear got him. The bear ran through the cloud of bear spray to rip on the guy. The daughter of an acquaintance of mine worked with the Alaska Fish & Game Department as a summer intern doing some kind of a bear study and he told me that they used shotguns as back up. A 12 gauge slug is more than double the diameter of a .30-06/.308. If you are able to put a bunch of shots into a grizzly, you'd better have a pretty convincing argument about why the bear had all those holes in it and you didn't.

I can't fathom going any way but an 870 w/18-20" bbl and mag extender or Benelli M-3 if it's purely a defensive bear deterrent.

An AR-10/ LR 308 loaded with 150 grain TTSX or 160 grain partitions would give impressive results in flesh or in chewing up cover

Hunting deer is one thing but fending off things bent on killing you is another.

You guys might want to read a book titled Alaska's Bear Hunting Judge, by Richard C. Folta. It was first published in 1986, but sold well enough there were two printings, and they can be purchased on the Internet for around $35.

He moved to Alaska just before WWI, and started off hunting on Kodiak with a Remington semi-auto .35 Remington--but eventually went to the Garand....

The Benelli M3 is pump and/or semi auto.
