Would not a 200 grain bullet do better in the 3006 ?
Is the shot taken in the video in violation of Canadian law?
What is needed to shoot 1200 yards?

How far can one ethically shoot a 3006 at an elk? Good question Angus, leaving the ft lbs of energy debate out of it for a moment, let's accept the 1,000 ft lbs so often repeated in the past by many writers. I'll accept 1,000 ft-lbs of energy when you (or anyone) can tell me what it's based on. I'll be waiting. And when we get an answer to that, I'd like to hear how a 50 cal round ball ever killed anything.

I have been very impressed with the 160 FTX 30 cal.
Thumped several cows with vintage savage 99s in 300 savage. Between 200 - 400 yards.
Been working up a 308 mx this year. I thought it was a good video. The guy did his homework. I personally wouldn't chose a 30-30 for shooting past 300 yards on elk. And yes, his shot was high. I'm sure he was probably aiming for the boiler room, and almost missed. As someone else said, the group fired at 300 yards looked big, but if you look at the tape measure, it looks to be around 4", not 9", like someone what's been said. Plenty precise for an elk at that distance, but borderline for terminal performance. My elk hunting partner dropped a bull with a well placed shot with a 160 FTX from his 1949 model 94. That bullet works well, from what I've seen. The shot was only 30 yards too, but the bullet performed well. So, when I got my 30-30, that is the first bullet I bought. Plus, when I shot factory ammo through my rifle, it liked the Leverevolution with the 160 FTX the best.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Look, if somebody plugged a moose, an elk, or a deer at 300+ yards and brought it down quickly without having a goat rodeo, I say +1
Me? I have 2 30-30s on the rack, but they'd be one of the last choices I'd make going out to hunt even a 120 lb whitetail doe. You can say I'm not that good a hunter. That's fine. You can say I don't practice enough. Cool. The thing of it is, I'm much more confident with 30-06 and 308 Win, and mildly 7mm-07- curious. The truth of it is that I would be more likely to take my Brown Bess off the rack than my Marlin 336. It may not have the range, but it sure packs a whallop with a 11 GA/600 grain ball. Furthermore, my longest shot on game was 200 yards on a big buck in 2022. Honestly, if I had a shot out past 300 yards, I'd get up and move closer.

I think that this was stupid. The 30-30 is barely adequate within 50 yards for elk. No one should use it for long range shots against elk. I wonder how many elk he wounded and they escape?

I agree with you shaman, I had at one time more 30/30s than any other caliber.
But I don’t hunt with the caliber.
They are fun to shoot , but so are many others.
Finally got a 303 savage set up. Using 150 grain Nosler partitions and LVR powder. I think 37.5 grains and a Remington 9.5 s.
I am really disappointed with the 308 mx , I doubt it’s going to be up to the 300 savage in performance.
I usually end up with a Model 99 ( 300 savage) 88 ( .308 win, 284 win.) BLR ( .308 win, 708 ) .
I did hunt with a 356 ER one year.

I feel the same way about shooting deer with a .223 at more than 200 yards. I am convinced they loose a lot of animals.
