Why should a citizen be forced to fight for the defense of a foreign unknown country half way around the world? I could see a draft to defend our country from military invasion (actually I doubt a draft would be necessary as most would volunteer) but to use conscription to fight for "freedom" in a foreign land? He hit the nail on the head a few years ago but then caved and apologized and then joined their club. Doesnt sound like he'd perform well under pressure.
Lessons learned in Vietnam caused the development of four of the most successful jet fighters, all-aspect IR missiles, and active radar guided missiles. The US has lost ONE air to air engagement since Vietnam.
So, it wasn’t a total wash.
Except that 2 million or more Vietnamese civilians, some and maybe most innocent of wrongdoing got killed.

Which would be involuntary servitude which is unlawful in the USA except as punishment for a crime says the 13th amendment.

Without compulsory military service being allowed we could/would have stayed out of both world wars, the Korean war, and the Vietnam war and we would be trillions of dollars ahead.

The US was capable of destroying the economy of North Viet Nam and choking the fight out of them but fought a war with borders instead. The money makers in government didn’t fight to win they fought to not lose. So we lost. Lost lives. Real lives of real young people that should never have been in a jungle another world away.
