Coydog or a lot of red wolf genes. Likely both.

That was my first thought

I read here and there that coy-dog pups usually don't see adulthood.
That dark coloration and overall build might indicate that some do.

I've never seen a cross with dog or wolf. Have no way of knowing.
Actually wouldn't as I've never dna tested a dark coyote. I suspect they can and do exist though.

See far too many of them here in Central Lower Michigan, kill them all.

most likely explanation...
There's an area, maybe the size of a couple of townships, not far from where I live that is known for dark colored coyotes. Everyone hollers coy-dog. They've been tested and are 100% coyote
Don't see them as sleek and well built as the pic above

Between AK, Northern MN, and MT I've seen about 20 wolves in the wild from distances of ~50yds to 1/2Mi. Once you see a wolf in person, in the wild, you'll NEVER again wonder if a coyote is a wolf.

That said, I agree w/others saying there could certainly be some domestic doggy in the pictured subject's bloodlines.

Probably so. I haven't seen dark colored or even well furred coyotes anywhere in West Texas or Southern NM.

I didn't see where anyone said wolf basically. But possibly a crossbreed with a wolf.

Thats certainly far from a 100 percent wolf having seen quite a few of both over the years.

I was a 6 yr old kid in the linked community below when this sheep killing machine was finally apprehended. If memory is correct, there was a $5K bounty on it. Rumor had it someone had returned from a western vacation with a couple pups. On their initial off leash stroll, one was run over and killed, and the second headed for the hills. At that time (1952-3), I think coyotes were still solely west of the Mississippi.

I don’t think the nose is pointy enough to be a coyote, although a side view would be more helpful.

Killed a coyote in Caldwell co Texas about 30 years ago that had a very, very dark, almost black coat. Was not melanistic. But a really cool looking animal. All coyote. Skinned it and had it in freezer when said freezer took a dump. Lost it and a bunch of deer.

I had a coy-dog named Angel when I was a senior in high school. She was one of a pair of pups that a friend of my parents' found on land he'd bought east of El Paso. He kept the male pup and gave us the female. She was sweet natured but had enough wild in her that she couldn't decide whether she wanted physical contact with us or not. Her mode of expressing affection was lovebites.

Angel could jump an eight-foot fence easily, and I spent many an afternoon chasing her around the neighborhood. I'd pick her up and carry her when I caught her and she never got too agitated to handle. I never abused her, but I got damned tired of having to run her down nearly every afternoon when I got home from school.

I've had a certain amount of experience dealing with wild animals captured shortly after birth, and I cannot imagine domesticating a full coyote as a pet.

A friend of mine had a Timber Wolf pup for a while, named it "Wolfie" (pretty imaginative, huh? LOL) and kept it in the washroom. It was about five months old the one and only time I was around that beast. Wolfie had very poor manners the first time I met him, and I never went back to that guy's house.

Don't be the darkness.

America will perish while those who should be standing guard are satisfying their lusts.
