Very cool. An early post-81, so still has all the nice stuff (other than pinned and recessed), e.g., hammer mounted firing pin, forged steel instead of MIM, no frame mounted lock, no sleeve barrel. Nice find. I've got a few early post-81s as well, including an early post-81 six inch Model 29.

Nice score Troutnut, I bought a set of those grips once for $50 at a gunshow. My bud says I didn't know you had a rd butt N frame, I said I don't but they are worth 3 times that. Sold them a couple years later for $150. That's a dang scarce buy in really nice looking condition. Mb

Cool rig! Lew Horton made some 3" 629s . I thought the boxes were marked and the one I recall was unfluted cylinder. But I'm far from knowledgeable about them

Cool gun, the Combats suck with magnum loads but they’re super cool just because they complete the package.
Iirc, Horton commissioned a run of 3” 629s in 87 or 88. No doubt these were patterned after the Jovino Enforcer custom conversions. Shortly after running the LH guns S&W released the 3” as a standard production item.
Contrary to the beliefs of some S&W produced some high quality and very cool revolvers in the late 80s and into the 90’s. They cranked out a bunch of short runs during that timeframe that are unique and very sought after by many. I had one of the Lee Horton runs of 3” 625s that was possibly the best put together S&W I’ve ever owned, it was astonishingly accurate and had a perfectly timed action, like a fool I swapped it off for something. Even had the matching S&W branded holster that was available from Hortons.

Yes, that's the deal that we're all looking for and you found it! Congratulations! I've owned several of the 3" N-Frames, including the unfluted models mentioned. Fun to shoot with .44 Special loads.

I'd like to see the muzzle flash at night with those 3" barrels and full power .44 mag loads.

Had it out this morning. Started with 240 gr SWC over 10 grains of unique. Then a few cylinders full of 240 gr XTPs over 23 gr H110. They got your attention but easily manageable

Nice Shooting!
I once took a 29-5 3" with unfluted cylinder and full underlug to the range with my Father-in-law. I loaded up 3 .44 Specials and the 4th was a full bore Magnum load. After shooting a couple of rounds he commented on how controllable and accurate it was. Then the 3rd round then the Fireball! Still chuckle every time I remember the look on his face.
Enjoy that .44 Smith. I'm down to just one. It's a No-dash 4" that is tight and shoots fantastic.

👍👍. Virginia has high humidity during summer, fall plus some people have caustic sweat so be sure to take grips off and check for oxidation especially around exposed backstrap area. This is were rust can sometimes be found. Good news is if present rust is easy to remove from surface of stainless steel.
