Holy damn! That’s a heck of a bull. I’ve seen some big Roosevelts but nothing quite like that.

Congrats to the guy. It’s a cool rack no matter where he shot it.

I can't say too much here, my son works for one of the largest timber owners, but like all California draws, premium tags mysteriously seem to get drawn by people involved in projects and programs with Calif Dept of Fish and Wildlife. The draw odds to the west of me, Marble Mtn rifle, are .03%...that's 3/10ths of 1 % and you need 19 points. And amazingly, biologists, CDFW employees, USFS Elk monitoring employees get drawn in astonishing numbers. Big donors to the Roosevelt and Rocky programs fare very well also. Save your money guys, it's a rigged game.
Dang, back in the 90's when I worked for the timber company, no one around our area ever got drawn, Was always somebody from SoCal that seemed to draw a tag.

I put in for the hunts near here, but figure I'll be even more decrepit by the time I should ever get lucky enough to draw one. And I'd have to get lucky and find one close to a road on the Devil's Garden.

My son has worked for a succession of owners and operators of the timberlands originally under the huge Ralph L Smith lands, known as the Roseburg Timberlands. Each time there is a sale, he gets thrown in on the sale going with the new owners fortunately. Unknown to most, regenerating timberland (a new term for cut over forest) is a hot item, it is the most carbon trading brownie points you can get. Valuable now, stumps before. Up until 8 or 9 years ago, PLM (landowner tags) tags were going for under 5,000, but now they have skyrocketed into the 20,000 bracket. The company used to save a landowner tag every year and give it to one of the employees at the Christmas party...ho, ho, ho, not anymore.
The point is, with tag prices going so high, the private land elk populations and trophies are rising sharply too, it's a fact, elk do better in logged over ground. Sadly, this is the future of hunting for our grandkids. Just two miles north of the flintshack, a rancher sells two Roosevelt antler tags to high bidder, last year they went for 12,000 each....to shoot an elk in sight of the highway in the pasture (be careful Sir, don't shoot the angus). What a challenge.
I like to call it the Euro style hunt.

All I know, if things go as they plan, my friends are soon to close on a nice property a few hundred miles or so north of here in OR that comes with a couple of landowner elk tags.

I can never seem to get drawn around here, so I won't mind going up there if they do get the property, and shooting a nice tasty cow in their hayfield.

Brother Geno,
The best elk in the world is the one you shoot in your neighbors pasture! extra gooder if you can load it with the tractor! smile

I've never been "lucky" enough to get one out in the hills. Miles from a road, without a horse or vehicle to get it out. Had bulls close enough to hit with my arrow.........but had a cow tag.

Maybe I wasn't unlucky after all???

I kinda dreaded the pack out. Even when younger. Now, 20+ years have passed and my back is in way worse shape.

High $ tags + low availability yielding bigger herds..
Well, good. Going to need that when the wolves get fully entrenched. I can't imagine any effective way to control wolf population in the Coast Range

I'm all ok with hunting to the best of our physical abilities.
What I left out of the above rambling tale, one of last years hunters, a fit looking fellow at the ranch north of me, paid the farmer extra to use his backhoe to tote the dead elk from the field, to a nearby timbered hillside...where they carefully posed the elk for a photo shoot in the 'boonies'. If the hunter hadn't appeared fit, I would never have thought a thing about it.

Humboldt county has HUGE elk.

They wander in and out of the redwood national park.
