I’m at a gun show and saw this Savage 99 in 303 Savage. I was wondering if anyone had a quick idea of its value. It is in extremely good shape, serial numbered in 200XXX range. Lever is vivid case color, blueing is 95% and wood is 95%. Looks totally refinished and reblued to me.
Without having hands on it, I'd call it a shooter grade rifle. $700-$800 Agreed, refinished. Factor that into the price. I would not give more that $500, and then only if the bore is perfect. The 303 is a collector's item, so originality controls IMHO.

Nice piece for sure . Not sure of the value of a refinished rifle , but a WAG would be around $7-800.00.If you buy it , Wisconsin Cartridge makes loaded ammo for it.

Since it’s at a gun show and the 99 is still sitting there, it’s not worth the price whatever he is asking.
Original high condition 99s never sit long. I have been collecting them for 25 years. There are exceptions, but tampered guns are not nearly as desirable.

Best advice given so far? "If it was worth the price, it would already been gone" You might be looking at a different gun, there is no gouge or finish in a gouge on the forearm.

No sir, I am familiar with both 303's, and the 99's with bad bores I have seen were most often 303. Nobody else said the 303 was "interchangeable" with the 30/30, that'sall you. Ballistically, they are equivalent, with the 303 being marginally superior. Mule Deer compared the case capacity of both and found them to be within a tenth of a grain. Not identical, not the same, not interchangeable; just equivalent. No deer would know the difference.

I have a 99 takedown In original finish (not new condition) with a bright shiny bore. I’ve killed deer and caribou with it, spruce grouse too, with the.410 barrel.
You can reload.303 with.30-30 data. I don’t see where there’s a whole lot of difference ballistically, other than.303 was originally loaded with 190 grain bullet (at proportionally less speed than .30-30 170 grain.)
In any event, it’s one of my favorites.

Is it a 30 caliber or .303? How's it marked? 30 Sav would be a 30-30 chambering. 303 Savage is just that. Either should have a .308 bore if that's what you're asking.

I use 30-30 load data and projectiles. The brass and dies are enough different as to not be interchangeable.

Savage Arms did not care to promote another manufacturers proprietary cartridge, early Savage 99’s had a SAV 30 barrel stamp instead of the 30 W.C.F. barrel stamp that Winchester used. Both cartridges are one and the same.

.308 on the left, .303 center, 30-30 right. 🤔 Never forget the day, back in high school, one of the guys pulled up in his car where a bunch of us were hanging around down town and we all went over to talk to him. Leaning across the seat on the passenger side was a SMLE. On the seat, between him and the gun were two boxes of .303 Savage ammo and one of .303 British. Being one of the kids who knew a bit about guns, I mentioned to him, "Uh, Butch, those .303 Savages aren't the right ammo for that rifle." He just shrugged and said, "They work okay."

LHS $1400.00 I wasn't the only one to tell you a half a yard. You need to get better at picking the corn out of the sh it. I told you the best advise you got was "if its still there when the Show started its overpriced" And that advice didn't come from me. Very very very very rarely are there any deals at a gun show. Because for two hours before the show opens the Dealers are dealing with each other.

I reckon I misunderstood the purpose of this thread. Sometimes we forget it is the Campfire. I don’t know anything about Savage 99’s and I knew there were quite a few here that did. I came across the listed 303 Savage and could make a trade for it at a net cost of $550.00. Not knowing anything about models of Savage 99’s and the condition of this one looked genuinely original. It’s not like I haven’t seen refinished guns and so forth, but in the hands, this gun didn’t look refinished. There were enough comments by guys that knew what they were talking about, that I let it go. Lighting for what it was and how far I was away from home, time at the show and unanswered questions, made me post it here to get a Savage 99 expert’s opinion. As usual, you have a few losers that know everything about guns and gun shows, but there was also good advice from a few knowledgeable people about which model would be a shiny, bright blue, rather than a less shiny finish. If I get a gun that is new to me, I have to be able to live with it if I get stuck with it and I don’t think a 303 Savage would be one I could shoot easily if I did get it. If it was a 250 Savage, I would have made the deal without any questions. I bought this rifle a couple weeks ago and didn’t bother asking any questions about it. This Bannerman ammo is available in Fairbanks Alaska. So it should be almost everywhere. 32 Win Special is the stuff that is hard to get.

My 1926 303 take down has the bad bore, but will still do 3 inches at 100 yds, good enough for close woods hunting. The first smokeless ammo still had corrosive primers and some early stuff was still kicking around for years, just like today when some one gives you some from the 50's 60's or 70's that they found cleaning out uncle Joes garage. Its not a far stretch that the same thing happened in 1930 with 1910 ammo someone found. I fitted mine with a no drill scope mount and a Weaver K3PCH

What seems to be lost in this query, was not the asking price, but what I could have gotten it for. $550.00 and it still sounded like it was best to walk away, which I did.

It is a King’s Gun Works Colt that I got from Hank Williams Jr. he had them put a 3 3/4 inch barrel on a first generation frame, with a Bisley hammer and one piece grips. It is 45 Colt… Very nice! That’s quite the provenance that pistol has. Not one you’ll be taking on backpacking trips probably! And thanks for the information! To show my appreciation I will take back every bad thing that I’ve said about Montanans … except what I said about Jim Conrad, deflave, Ingwe, …. and some others too numerous to mention!
