I’m at a gun show and saw this Savage 99 in 303 Savage. I was wondering if anyone had a quick idea of its value. It is in extremely good shape, serial numbered in 200XXX range. Lever is vivid case color, blueing is 95% and wood is 95%. Front sight has blade with a bead formed into it..

Looks totally refinished and reblued to me.

Without having hands on it, I'd call it a shooter grade rifle. $700-$800

Agreed, refinished. Factor that into the price.

I would not give more that $500, and then only if the bore is perfect.

The 303 is a collector's item, so originality controls IMHO.

Nice piece for sure . Not sure of the value of a refinished rifle , but a WAG would be around $7-800.00.If you buy it , Wisconsin Cartridge makes loaded ammo for it.

Problem with most of the 303's is the bore looks like a sewer pipe from non cleaning after corrosive primed ammo use..mb

ETA OP, the 303 is equivalent to the 30/30. For some reason, 99's in 30/30 seem to sell for less than any other caliber.

I would love an original condition takedown in 303 with a great bore but they are too much $$$$.

Since it’s at a gun show and the 99 is still sitting there, it’s not worth the price whatever he is asking.

Original high condition 99s never sit long. I have been collecting them for 25 years. There are exceptions, but tampered guns are not nearly as desirable.

That’s the 1920’s factory Savage ‘mirror blue’ finish on the receiver
The swivel studs are not original to the gun
Does the tag read $1,800?

The gun looks minty, not refinished. The bolt shows little sign of use, it just looks great, that’s why I asked those that know 99’s. It doesn’t look refinished.

Lotta unknowns, no details, appears full redo, around 5 seems correct ball park for that 1899A
Couple of corrections, never seen or heard the "sewer pipe" issue with Savages, I think the poster is confusing a comment about .303 Brit.
The other, .303 is NOT equivalent to 30-30. They are not interchangeable, and loaded to original spec., the .303 Savage is a fair bit ballisticly superior.

Butt is a replacement, fore end refinished over the gouge in it.

Nobody else said the 303 was "interchangeable" with the 30/30, that'sall you. Ballistically, they are equivalent, with the 303 being marginally superior. Mule Deer compared the case capacity of both and found them to be within a tenth of a grain.

Not identical, not the same, not interchangeable; just equivalent.

I have a 99 takedown In original finish (not new condition) with a bright shiny bore. I’ve killed deer and caribou with it, spruce grouse too, with the.410 barrel.

You can reload.303 with.30-30 data. I don’t see where there’s a whole lot of difference ballistically, other than.303 was originally loaded with 190 grain bullet (at proportionally less speed than .30-30 170 grain.)

In any event, it’s one of my favorites.

Hard to tell without looking at the rifle in person 500-600 if refinished, 1600 to 1800 if Original

How's it marked? 30 Sav would be a 30-30 chambering. 303 Savage is just that. Either should have a .308 bore if that's what you're asking.

303 savage. It appears like it is still considered 30 caliber, as the 303 British is 312.

Savage Arms did not care to promote another manufacturers proprietary cartridge, early Savage 99’s had a SAV 30 barrel stamp instead of the 30 W.C.F. barrel stamp that Winchester used. Both cartridges are one and the same.

This one has a good bore, as do two others I own. Not interchangeable with 30-30, but ballistically the same.

🤔

Never forget the day, back in high school, one of the guys pulled up in his car where a bunch of us were hanging around down town and we all went over to talk to him. Leaning across the seat on the passenger side was a SMLE. On the seat, between him and the gun were two boxes of .303 Savage ammo and one of .303 British. Being one of the kids who knew a bit about guns, I mentioned to him, "Uh, Butch, those .303 Savages aren't the right ammo for that rifle." He just shrugged and said, "They work okay."

What is the meaning of equivalent?

equal or interchangeable

1. equal or interchangeable in value, quantity, significance, etc. 2. having the same or a similar effect or meaning.

Don't try to push your poor choice of wording inti my mouth.

Nothing is "all on you" (sic)

You might be looking at a different gun, there is no gouge or finish in a gouge on the forearm.

There are 3 guns in photo. Your talking about the one in the middle , correct?

Get glasses. The forend looks my dog chewed on it.
Don’t be a dick RAM

FU Egg, that photo is taken at distance, and even still you can see what should be a sharp edge, rippled, dented gouged and finished over

I wasn't the only one to tell you a half a yard. You need to get better at picking the corn out of the sh it.

I told you the best advise you got was "if its still there when the Show started its overpriced" And that advice didn't come from me.

Very very very very rarely are there any deals at a gun show. Because for two hours before the show opens the Dealers are dealing with each other.

The ‘Art of the Deal’ is recognizing and not hesitating to act upon a deal. Over the years have found more than my share of very, very, very, very good deals at gun shows.

Sometimes we forget it is the Campfire. I don’t know anything about Savage 99’s and I knew there were quite a few here that did. I came across the listed 303 Savage and could make a trade for it at a net cost of $550.00. Not knowing anything about models of Savage 99’s and the condition of this one looked genuinely original.

It’s not like I haven’t seen refinished guns and so forth, but in the hands, this gun didn’t look refinished. There were enough comments by guys that knew what they were talking about, that I let it go. Lighting for what it was and how far I was away from home, time at the show and unanswered questions, made me post it here to get a Savage 99 expert’s opinion.

As usual, you have a few losers that know everything about guns and gun shows, but there was also good advice from a few knowledgeable people about which model would be a shiny, bright blue, rather than a less shiny finish. If I get a gun that is new to me, I have to be able to live with it if I get stuck with it and I don’t think a 303 Savage would be one I could shoot easily if I did get it. If it was a 250 Savage, I would have made the deal without any questions.

I bought this rifle a couple weeks ago and didn’t bother asking any questions about it. It was mint and probably unfired, I didn’t need any help making that decision…

Gotcha. I’m set up to load 303 Sav, so caliber wouldn’t an issue for me, but hunting down brass could be a headache these days if you don’t already have it. 1899 Savages are really neat rifles, but it has become damn hard to find one in nice, original condition without a stock cracked where it meets the tang, or extra holes drilled in it for sling swivel studs or scope mounts.

This Bannerman ammo is available in Fairbanks Alaska. So it should be almost everywhere.

My 1926 303 take down has the bad bore, but will still do 3 inches at 100 yds, good enough for close woods hunting. The first smokeless ammo still had corrosive primers and some early stuff was still kicking around for years, just like today when some one gives you some from the 50's 60's or 70's that they found cleaning out uncle Joes garage. Its not a far stretch that the same thing happened in 1930 with 1910 ammo someone found. I fitted mine with a no drill scope mount and a Weaver K3PCH

[quote=shrapnel]I’m at a gun show and saw this Savage 99 in 303 Savage. I was wondering if anyone had a quick idea of its value. It is in extremely good shape, serial numbered in 200XXX range. Lever is vivid case color, blueing is 95% and wood is 95%. Front sight has blade with a bead formed into it..

Link to some photographs of an 1899B in .303 that I recently sold at auction for $1300 might give you some idea. Lot number 223.

Was there added fees for buyers?

I used an auction house once…..I figure he took 15% from me…also .added 15% to the buyers cost to boot.

What seems to be lost in this query, was not the asking price, but what I could have gotten it for. $550.00 and it still sounded like it was best to walk away, which I did.

Thanks for the help, even RAM said Good For You, (gfy) and I thought he was upset with me…

It is a King’s Gun Works Colt that I got from Hank Williams Jr. he had them put a 3 3/4 inch barrel on a first generation frame, with a Bisley hammer and one piece grips. It is 45 Colt…

Very nice! That’s quite the provenance that pistol has. Not one you’ll be taking on backpacking trips probably!

And thanks for the information! To show my appreciation I will take back every bad thing that I’ve said about Montanans … except what I said about Jim Conrad, deflave, Ingwe, …. and some others too numerous to mention!
