Has anybody use this bullet for elk out of the 375 H&H if so how did it do? Thank you

I've used the Speers in my 338 and had some problems with them . They were very accurate in my 375s but I never could feel like I trusted them after the problems I had in my 338s....

What problems did you have? I tried the 270s in my .375 JDJ and just going through the target backer I had core seperations. They were very accurate, but seeing the jackets just laying on top of the berm didn't instill confidence. I switched to the 260 grain NAB.

Speer BTSPs are not Hotcors. They are about as soft as a cup core gets. Some old-style Silvertips and some Nosler Ballistic Tips are in that leauge. Haven't used a Hornady SST, but maybe those too.

Re the 270 gr .375", punched a shoulder on a big ME whitetail and the bullet went to pieces. Guesstimate impact velocity was 2550 fps, .375 Ruger. While "failing", the bullet killed PDQ. Still believe they're a perfect whitetail bullet, but downloaded them to MV 2550 for my "layout".

For elk I'd want something else in a H&H unless all shots will be past 200 yds.

Well that settles it. No speer 270

I have taken a moose with a NAB, no complaints. For all round use I use Hornady Rn. Good accuracy, reasonable price.

Sample of 1 with 270 Speer in No. 1 375H&H - small cow facing me head on, 40 yd neck shot, and dropped in tracks. Not much of a test, but worked fine in that scenario.

Other than for deer in relatively slow calibers, I'd avoid ALL Speer bullets and especially in a 375 H&H and the type of game that caliber is meant for.

If I loaded a 375 today in my M70 I would be tempted to start and stop at the 300 TSX.

Fotis; have you tried the 270gr LRX?

As Sam wrote, the SPEER boat tail bullets are not hot core. They open rapidly. When I first started shooting SPEER bullets I found this out. I avoided all boat tail bullets for quite a while, due to the miserable performance of the SPEER boat tail bullets.
I have successfully used the plain base hot core bullets in 35 caliber*. However I believe they didn’t expand much - hard to tell. The animals I shot with them died but the internal damage was not great.

I had one instance with 6mm hot cores where I shot a pronghorn 6 times through the lungs before he dropped. The first time was when he was getting up at first light. Those bullets shot well in that 6mm - accurate that is. All those shots were less than 100 yards away. Evidently he didn’t know where I was as he ran/walked a half circle around me. I believe there was zero expansion with this combination.

* I was shooting those hot cores - 250 grain - in 350 Rem Mag.

I’m thinking of using hot core 87 grain 25 caliber bullets in my 99 250 Savage. They are very accurate and SPEER bullets are easy to find in this “shortage” of components. I’m not at ease with this thought though.

Don't was your time and money. 260 Accubond. Cow elk at 400. Moose at 150. Excellent. The Horn. are great for light game.

Yup with Big game. Velocity was there, but no accuracy to speak of. Trying RL 17 this weekend.

I have zero experiences with the 270 gr Speer.I used a few on a soft dry dirt bank, got consistent results.....6 inches max of penetration, shed jackets and fragmented cores....going at 2500 fps. Decided to never use one on game.

If you have Varget give it a try. It worked well in my .375

what was your load and velocity?

I used the 260 accubond in Africa on plains game. I shot 5 rounds and killed 5 animals. Although a perfect triangle shot on a big zebra with an exit on the other side the size of a golf ball and it ran 150 yards before dropping. They weren't all instant kills but they all died pretty quickly. Although it seemed a bit much for the steenbok.

It not hesitated to use the 260 nab for everything on this side of the world.

Fotis; I’ve sold the rifle and didn’t keep my notes. So going from memory it was maximum charge weight from the Barnes online data and a bit over 2700fps.

Barnes on line shows 73.5g of Varget as maximum producing 2715 fps. Accuracy was in the range of .5” to .95” for three shots.

The rifle was a Weatherby Vanguard DGR.

I always regarded them as deer bullets and used NPs and NABs for moose. Never did get to shoot a deer with a 375.
