I had all the needed forms to do my taxes early this year so I filed Jan 23. I had a small refund coming, both fed and state. I kept checking the IRS 'where's my refund' site and it kept showing as still processing, right up until yesterday morning. Then the refund showed up in my bank account yesterday. The IRS bypassed the 'refund sent' stage. My taxes are very easy, just standard deduction and the senior 1040 form. I use the free online Turbotax site and it usually takes me less than 30 min to do it all.

What is this “refund” thing you speak of?

I have yet to print off all of the necessary documents to send to our CPA. Probably next week.

I don’t pay any mind to that stuff; wife handles it all. She has half the alphabet after her name. Among all those letter somewhere is the sequence CPA.

When I retired, my final paycheck from work included over a year of accrued vacation. It grossed a bit over $70K. Withholding hit it pretty hard, Fed and Oregon.
Needless to say, I was pretty anxious to get taxes filed. $4.5K coming back from Federal. Same from Oregon.
I grabbed the H&R Block download and put all the data in and e-filed. Only to get another 1099 a week later from my pension plan. A whole $800. Damn.
I intend to go down to the H&R office and pay them to file an amended return. I will wait until about Mar 1 just to make sure no more surprises are in store. Who know how long it will be before I see my nine grand.

I'll pay estimated in April and file a delay. Don't remember the last time my taxes were done in April. Several K1's usually aren't done until summer.
I'm still be audited for 2021. I think that's about over.

I hate giving the govt a tax free loan. So I aim for zero refund or me owing some, but not enough for a penalty.

Refund otherwise known as interest free loan to Uncle Samuel.

Havnt seen a federal refund in years. Had my employer figure out my withholding so I would owe $1500 or so instead of a refund. Have a side gig too to help lose money as well. Why you ask,,,, why should the gov use my money interest free for a year and also I’m just waiting for the day the govusays it has no money to issue a refund and you the taxpayer are screwed .

It's really not a refund. You over payed all year and you are just getting back what you over payed.

If I'm getting a refund, I've screwed up my withholding. I am not into losing purchasing power of my own money or giving the government interest free loans. I'd much rather have the money to spend during the year and pay the tax bill with depreciated dollars much later.

It's really not a refund. You over payed all year and you are just getting back what you over payed. That is the literal definition of refund….your money returned to you.

I was surprised to have received 1099's from all of moms annuities before 2/1. But ours is still going to be a mess this year. Most likely file for an extension.
