Goddam you are ignorant.

This map is several years old, but shows where they are in multiple states in the west with lots of public land.

the map is incorrect, I dunno where the heck you got it or who made it. I am very familiar with the counties shown in both nevada and utah if they are counting pigs that escaped from a farm and are no longer living ok, aint no roaming feral hogs in those areas. javalina don't count. nice try.

That report also shows the majority (90%+ I think) were taken on private lands, which makes sense in Cali. Look at an ownership map overlain on a watercourse map and most every low gradient watercourse is surrounded by private lands and some of the higher gradient streams too. Seeing as how water is pretty scarce here, those are the areas that got setlled/homesteaded.

When I was a wildlife specialist in NM, we had them in the Lincoln Natl. Forest. Most people didn't know they were there, but people who saw them and found damage called in to report them.

I ended up writing the feral hog management program for the Nation Forest Service, but was clear that there was only a limited expectation of making much difference. USDA and others did go to work on them though.

It seems like you go forever without seeing any, or sign of them, and them BAM!, they explode in that area, and everyone has them at least periodically.

Are the still in the Lincoln? Or did they perish from some natural means?

If they get established in our forests/BLM land I can't see ever getting them eradicated barring a really intense program utilizing every method known. Just too big and too wild in places.

For all the "nonbelievers".
Davy Crockett NF
San Augustine NF
Sam Rayburn NF
Angelina NF and the Caddo-LBJ Nat'l Grasslands
....and that's not counting all the TPW operated WMA's.
There is also thousands of acres of "papermill" land in East Texas.
Soooo.....for those willing to make the effort, public hunting IS available in Texas.

If you took a flat iron to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana or several other western states, flattened out all the mountains, chances are they'd be almost as big as Texas!
As it is, kinda hard to "homestead" a section of land that's tilted at a 80° angle.
Nobody wanted it, so the gummint took it and turned it into "public land"! That's okay, it's pretty useless for much else than grazing a few cattle and chasing deer and elk.
Texas land is pretty productive. Even that barren crap out west that looks useless, is a cattlemen delight. That bare ground is so full of minerals and vitamins, livestock can get fat on the sparse vegetation.

The four NF's are pretty sandy, swampy type lands with soft muck for a soil composition. Pigs love it.
The NF's are all in East Texas. The locals (some of them!) make the characters in "Deliverance" seem to be Mensa candidates.
Just be careful.

Nobody mentioned javalina but you, dumbass.

The discussion is on feral hogs. Try to stay focused here...

The map I posted was a 2015 USDA APHIS map. But there's an updated map too. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ou...nal-activities/feral-swine/sa-fs-history

You been over every square inch of those areas in Nevada and Utah? You been damn busy. Maybe you missed a few properties? laugh

I went to Maui once and didn't see any wild hogs there... Must mean they don't exist, right?

If we could buy you for what you're worth and sell you for what you THINK you're worth, we'd all get rich! laugh laugh

Cool beans GW

However, we have more than that in our local National Forest according to the wiki deal

Quote
Modoc National Forest is a 1,654,392-acre (6,695 km2) U.S. national forest in Northeastern California.

I'm guessing 2/3 that much in BLM land in the county too.

So, this part of Cali has something that's bigger than it is in TX laugh

We ain't got many pigs though whistle

"... they are counting pigs that escaped from a farm ..."

That is the very definition of "feral hog". In Texas, any hog/pig not in a pen/pasture is considered vermin and open game.

The Spanish explorers started it. Knowing they would be coming back into the same area, they released the pigs they had on their ships to reproduce and provide a food source when they returned.

Sheep raisers along the Mexican border were having problems with coyotes killing their lambs. They eventually imported the true "Russian Boar" into Northern Mexico. Russians would root out entire coyote dens, eating pups and whatever else they discovered. Sadly. When they cleaned out the Mexican red wolf and the coyotes, they simply (swim? swam? swum? swimmed?) CROSSED the Rio Grande into Texas! Thanks guys!

The "javelina" isn't a "hog" at all, nor it related to the swine family. It is a "peccary".

Not those. They were stinky as hell.
We have many times though. Some are great!
