If you got snow on the ground it must not be fresh or you'd have answers already. Get yourself stacked with a good 12 gauge pump gun for sweeping detail.

You sure it wasn't just one of these little bastards? They can make a lot of noise for such a small critter.

One of my German Shepherds stays in the living room at night She is a good burglar alarm. Bad burglar alarm when a possum or coon walks through the yard a 3Am. She does her job. As much noise as she makes nobody would break into the house.

As cheap as they are these days, you need some cameras. Its nice to know what you got going on out there without having to walk into it blindly

Whatever you do don’t show yourself near a window or door or open the door to check outside holding a gun even if you are inside with the light off.

Lol, that's my dog too, she sounds like three tons of mean bitch!

I'm not sure what she would do if someone was dumb enough to come in.

I also suggest cameras at all points of entry. They are dirt cheap these days.
I do not, however, recommend the"WYZE" brand, they seem to go offline when you need them most.

Coincidentally, something similar happened here a few nights ago. It was 10:00 PM, and this is generally a very quiet neighborhood at night. So I hear loud black male voices sounding like they are at my front gate directing their voices towards the house. Two voices, shouting something, and laughing, and one starts imitating a large dog barking, followed by loud laughter from both men.

This is not a common thing heard from my living room while watching TV. I actually went to my bedroom, opened the armoire, and retrieved my loaded up AR, despite already being armed with a Glock 26. Kept it by me for the remainder of my time in the living room that evening, and leaned it against the wall by my bed when I retired.

Call me paranoid, but better safe than sorry. Not hard to grab a loaded AR when it's in the next room sitting in an armoire, so why not?

My first thought was actually to grab the loaded pump shotgun, but then I remembered I had unloaded it and put it in the safe a couple of weeks prior.

Hookeye,
Howdy.
Make sure to listen to some of the members here- walk outside and shoot ?whoever?- you know be 'the man' . It might cost you your home/family and your freedom but by'golly you didn't call the police.

Just some things to think about for future reference:

It’s not a binary choice. You can do both at the same time. If a worst-case scenario happens, there already is someone on the way, and you will need someone to clean up the mess anyway.

If it’s not worth calling about it when you hear something out of the ordinary making a ruckus outside your door, it probably isn’t worth calling it in a half hour later. A lot of times the 90% good folks who take up less than 10% of police time are hesitant to call the police while the 10% who take up more than 90% of police time will call over anything, and on the emergency line. Then, a bunch of the 90% will apologize for “wasting” police time. You’re paying for a service. Don’t be afraid to use it. Let the complaint operators do their job and prioritize it for you.

It alarmed you enough to motivate you to run out and buy a Ring doorbell.

Finding a sow brown bear and her cub on the deck 5 feet in front of the sliding glass door, wakes you right up. The other cub was at the foot of the stairs up. The Lab , sleeping in bed with me, had whisper-barked "bear", waking me up. Then he went back to sleep.

Hell of a bear dog!

Did the same thing on a camp on the Noatak, out of Kotzebue. Only I had to poke him awake first.... I already knew what was out there, but I didn't want him to die in his sleep.... smile

Two barky dogs in the house. One about 65 pounds. Two six month old Anatolian pups in the barn with the sheep. Grand daughter and her husband have a Golden Retriever and a GSD next door. Grandson's SO cruiser parked in the shared drive way. We don't get many "casual visitors". ... I am O.K. with that.

Black bear , possums , skunks, and the occasional neighborhood dopers standing in the yard gazing at the sky at night
The critters make me smile , but the dopers get a rude hello .
Get the hell out of my yard
My step daughter used to drive me nuts with her dumb shiet and friends
And acted as if they had no idea why you were so pissed
