I believe I have stumbled on to an unmolested 99T except it is missing the rear Lyman #6 leaf sight. I have searched for but no luck finding one. I was hoping someone might have a good source. Thanks in advance.

99T's didn't come with a rear leaf sight. They had a unique rear sight with a vertical groove/white line up the center. Hard to find, and pricey.
What's the 99T chambered in? 300?

The rear sight on a T is a Savage factory sight with no notch and a white line to line up with the front read bead sight.
Where did you get info that it is a Lyman??

Savage 99 .com has several pics of 99 sights that were used with the tang sight. Being uneducated about 99s I assumed (yes I know what assume usually means) that was what I should be looking for. Mine has a Lyman tang site but nothing, not even a blank in the barrel.

Have you removed the butt plate to see if anything has been stuffed in stock bolt hole? Every once in a while people strike gold by looking in there.

Thanks very much for that picture. I did remove the forend to check for the “T” but have not removed the butt plate, but I will. I’ll post results.

To clarify on Lightfoot's picture.. it's sitting on a round object to raise it up. That round part isn't part of the sight. You probably caught that, just wanted to be sure. Catalog picture here.

Thank you for the addition pictures. My front sight is the same you posted. Nothing in the butt plate except matching serial #s and another “T” stamped in the stock under the butt plate. Does the rear sight have a model designation or number?

This is a correct T sight. "Semi-buckhorn" I believe they called it.

I have three Ts. None have the red dot. My buddy has three Ts as well, and all of his do.
One of my Ts was missing a rear sight when purchased but I found one at a gun show for $25 about three years ago. Yes, a total score of a find.

I had a feeling this search might be measured in months or years but maybe I’ll get lucky, if I haven’t used it all up finding this rifle.

A question I keep forgetting to ask. Does the sight fold down?

we've discussed this before. we think some T's left the factory with different sights. Probably the production people didn't have the proper sight or sights when the rifle came down the production line and used what was available.

As pure as the rifle is its kinda strange that the rear barrel sight is missing, not even a filler. I know a lot can happen in 85 yrs but it makes me wonder. Honestly I would be happy with any period correct authentic sight.

If the rear sight is missing, then it likely wore a peep sight or a Stith mount at one time.
Wish more people would put the original sight in the buttstock to save it.

If you don't want to spend big bucks on a rear T sight there is a low profile semi buckhorn that is very similar but has the sight notch without the white line groove. One just sold on ebay for a stupid low price. Expect to pay 50-75 (or more) for one. ebay link

My buddy picked up a really nice model T this weekend at a gun show in 30-30. According to David’s book, are they fairly rare? All original except sights. 1935

I had a heck of a time finding a 99T in 30-30 and in 303 Savage. Yes, they are rare.
Not as rare as the 99T in 22HP - which is practically a unicorn rifle. But still very uncommon.
