The Chinese sure didn't just let it happen. The book I referenced mentions a B-17 shot down over China on May 29, 1959, a couple of weeks after I left Taiwan. ChiCom MiG pilot was an ace from the Korean war.
Interesting sidelight. The last B-17 from those missions is now being restored by the Commemorative Air Force.
