Had a major hernia surgery 4 years ago. Did the mesh and I honestly did the no lifting and dr instructions. Here recently have been having some sensation like a bunch of stick pins/burning in the area. Have had the feeling before but could relate it to an activity or strange movements. Started treadmill 1 mile a day at 3.5 mph and 2% incline a month ago and some lite weight lifting. Went on vacation to Mexico laid a weeek off exercising and its being sensitive a lot more than normal
Anyone else experience this? Got a call into the dr waiting on reply
Thanks

IA_fog,
I had an inguinal hernia repair quite a number of years ago (more than 15?). Old school Doc with a flat top and bow tie said, "I can make this stronger than it's ever been.. bulletproof." 5" incision with double mesh. Had those shooting pins sensation off and on for a couple of years, haven't had them since and Doc lived up to his word. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Worst part of the whole deal for me was clearing the anesthesia. Wish you luck, interested in what your Doc says

Mine was so long ago I think they used a Goodyear self-vulcanizing tire patch. I get a rare twinge in the scar area, but that's all.

I sometimes see TV ads from ambulance chasing lawyers saying something about compensation for bad mesh repairs. Have no clue what the particulars are, though. Internet search might tell more.

I had one done in 1993. Same here with an occasional twinge.

I’ve had two. One just last year. No complaints now. My first one I had to get fluid drained under my skin.

I had both sides done end of January last year. I'm a lot better than before but not 100% what I was before the first one, but that was about 5 years ago and I'm 55 years old. I have some pains at times and I thought I had ripped something when I loaded a deer for my invalid stepdad. I forgot I was invalid too. I hurt to some degree nearly two months after that one but I seem to have recovered.

I cycle nearly every day. It might be 20 miles or it might only be 5. If I do a couple days without doing any yoga, I get pain that I know is caused from being too tight. It goes away when I get back to stretching every day. Basically, it's a lot of work to keep taking care of this old body.

Mine was done by robot and he wasn't too gentle. My abdominal muscles were sore for 8 months. I felt like I had been stomped on by someone with a grudge for quite a while.

Wife had a hernia repair without mesh, it did'nt hold and she got a bowel obstruction. Rushed back to the hospital, they opened up, put mesh in and she has been trouble free for years now.

Same, but maybe 12 years...

Had mine done and a few years later, felt the tinges. The fascia or whatever they call it had torn again right above the old patch. Had another repair and now 6 yrs later, I'm felling tinges again when I overdo it.

Got one done about 7 or 8 years ago and have felt small indications of something there since. Had one done on the other side last year. First was cut open, etc. About 3 days in bed, then a period of recovery. The one last year was done robotically and virtually no recovery time, no pain. Surgeon that did the one last year said she could see where the previous one had moved around but was stable and not necessary to do anything with it. Went to see her a week after the procedure and she gave me green light to do anything I want at that time.

Had it done 15 years ago, did a solo Moose pack out six months after surgery, it bothered me then and I thought I injured it, but seemed to have healed up and no troubles since.

Yeah…. it ain’t over. You’ll tear muscle where it’s healed into the less numerous times in future years, and it’ll ache for weeks when you do. BTDT. But, I had mine fixed ~30 years ago and have done much more physical stuff than the average guy since then and it’s held up, so….

Not following instructions after the hernia mesh surgery will get you another scar, guranteed. Done right and you doing everything the Dr tells you, makes for a better outcome. if you blink, it involves abdominal muscles.

Had mesh surgery on right side about forty years ago. Young surgeon told me it would take twenty minutes or so and all would be good.

Once opened up it turned out the hernia was much larger than expected. He did a fine job!

Surgery took over an hour, was successful, and not a moment of trouble since. The surgeon, Dave Storey, is still in Whitehorse and retired this year. 😊

You and me both. Umbilical hernia, I’ve had it as long as I can remember.

Yes….but mine was just an Umbilical Hernia repair! A big difference from the groin!

Heck, I came home and rested for a couple of hours…..mainly waiting for my head to clear. Changed out a bunch of light bulbs in the house….went to work 2 days later. Though a disclaimer about the work…..I was working in the Control Rm! 😉 memtb

Double inguinal in 83 with mesh. Told my Urologist last visit that I was having intermittent blue ball pain from my spermatic cord. He said a simple, painless 5 minute procedure would fix that for life. They go in & snip the nerve that accompanies the cord. It is a very small incision which would be glued together. He said it is an option if you find the pain to be vexing.

Had a right inguinal and a navel done years ago.

Seems that if i have been doing something kind of taxing that day or on my feet for a long time i get a pain on the lower repair.

If it happened during the day i go lay down for about 15 20 minutes and it has gone away, like it never happened.

Had mesh hernia repair in March of 2022, for a hernia that was discovered in 1997. Surgery was scheduled for 7:30am, got to the surgery center at 6:30, was back home at 11:30am. Up walking immediately after surgery, and the remainder of the day, drove to drugstore about 2:00pm to get some medication. Could have gone to work the next day, but my wife wouldn't let me. Went back to work two days after the surgery.
Dr. Laker in West Bloomfield Michigan did the work. The guy is youngish, but he is absolute aces in my book.

From MD's that I have spoken with, it's very common surgery, but one that gets its share of complaints from patients afterward.

Mine was a year ago, and it's finally getting better.

But the operation was a real bitch, and I was a long time in recovering.

Had inguinal hernia surgery a year ago by a Dr in Cleveland Oh that only does hernia surgery. Uses what he calls a shouldice method, no mesh. Did a lot of research on the topic and decided to go to him because of all the complications I read about from the mesh. He told me very few health insurance's cover his surgery, mine of course didn't so I had to pay it out of pocket. I was back to working a blue collar job in 6 days. Besides numbness around the incision I have had zero issues. Wondering if the numbness is normal for anyone else?

I had an inguinal hernia repair with mesh done on my right side in July of 1999. I was fine until sometime around 2015, I started having pain in that area extending up to my ribs. Doctors here locally and at UVA said they couldn't do anything for me surgically. I finally found a doctor atVCU in Richmond who listened to everything I said and was willing to perform surgery on me. She went in and found that my old mesh had failed, she put in new mesh and also deadened some nerves. I stayed in the hospital overnight, the worst part of the whole thing was the ride back, it was snowing as we left Richmond at rush hour - and my wife was driving. She scares the hell out of me when it's 75 and the sun is shining. Recovery was a breeze compared to the first time and I felt relief immediately. Then a year and a half later I had total hip replacement on the same side, the combination of the bad hip and the old hernia had been the cause of my pain.

I had a major hernia repair last year from a previous incision. Had a big 6” scar from when the removed part of my pancreas….. developed a big ole bubble right in the middle of the incision about 6 months after the first surgery….. I had it repaired at Stanford with the mesh via the DaVinci robot…. Only 4 little incisions from the robot and probably the worst fuggin pain and recovery of my life. It was probably a full 6 months before I felt “normal” and it’s still just a little tender.

I think that robot [bleep] looks better because the incisions are smaller but I think they get those probes under your skin and just destroy your fuggin muscles…. Like they stir up everything moving them around to different positions while using the same entry point.

It was a same day surgery but it got so bad I didn’t make it 12 hours after we got home and my wife called an ambulance …. It’s been my only time ever in an ambulance and I’ve shattered my hip, had a compound tibia fracture, tore up my knee, collar bone, multiple broken arms and all kinds of other crap lol.

Long winded, but anything to do with the stomach/ab muscles is miserable…. Makes it hard to even breathe….. I’d call a doctor and have em do an X-ray or CT to make sure everything is good 👍🏻
