Subtracting the 1st digits of the SN from 100 works on MOST of them made from 1972 up until Remington started making them. There are a few exceptions with some special runs made during that time.

There's no info on the serial number starting with 08 on OldGuns.net, so I'm guessing it's a Remlin. If it's a Remington made Marlin you have to date it by the two letter code stamped in the barrel.

Oldguns.net has incomplete information. I have one with a serial number that starts with 08 and the barrel is stamped JM. I purchased it lightly used in 1997.
