Urea. Used by the Selective Catalytic Reduction Unit (SCR) in your exhaust to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. NOx is one of the pollutants that helps form smog or ground level ozone, a known respiratory irritant. The urea is metered and mixed in the exhaust which then goes across a catalyst. As it goes across the catalyst, chemical reactions occur that break down the NOx to nitrogen and water vapor.

Most new power plants and many other combustion processes (boilers, heaters, furnaces, reformers, diesels) all have SCR systems.

My dad bought a 24 gmc evolution with the 3.0l. He drove it down to Oklahoma and around, wife and daughter borrowed it to go the UP here in MI for a hockey tournament. While they were up there, I asked my dad when he filled the DEF last. He asked me "what's that?"

Called the wife and told her to buy a jug.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to drive, especially diesels.

Y'all got some learning to do. Delete that [bleep] and let it ride.

...........Pro tip....... don't get your truck stuck on the lift when the lift blows a fuse and you don't have a spare. Just FYI

His last diesel was a 2011 duramax. Didn't have that crap. He should have known but in his defense, those new trucks with the 3 liters really are soccer mom trucks. Nice trucks but not made for heavy work
