By now one would think you would proof read your thread titles before hitting the post button Wabi.

Could it be by design?

I have a handful of the 40% silver halves (1965-1970) in my chest of drawers that I've gotten in change over the years. Nowadays, it's extremely rare to get a 90% silver half dollar (or anything else) in change. After 1964, folks started reserving the 90% coins (i.e., stopped spending them), but few knew that the post 1964 half dollars still had 40% silver till 1971, at which point silver was completely removed from all our coinage. As a result, they are still occasionally seen in change even today.

One forgets that the banks coin machines sorted by weight, sorting out the heavier silver coins.

Half dollars made from 1794 through 1836 (larger size of 32.5 millimeters) weigh 13.48 grams
Half dollars made from 1836 through 1839 (smaller size of 30 millimeters) weigh 13.36 grams
Half dollars made from 1839 through 1853 (no arrows at the date) weigh 13.36 grams
Half dollars made from 1853 through 1873, (1853-55 with arrows at the date) weigh 12.44 grams
Half dollars made from 1873 through 1964, (1873-74 with arrows at the date) weigh 12.5 grams
40% silver half dollars made from 1965 to 1970 AND the 1976-S half dollar weigh 11.5 grams
Copper-nickel clad half dollars made since 1971 weigh 11.34 grams

I eat enough kraut or pickle eggs and a certain part of me becomes a fantastic venting machine.
