Cliff LaBounty did good work.
I have my share of original M-70s but the ones that are favorites are unusual: A Boise, ID. rifle that has a custom stock with the original barrel modified years ago-now in 35 Whelen. It looks exactly like a Super Grade. The other favorite is similar: An actual SG stock with the chambering in an original barrel to 338-06. These are working rifles with original iron sights for AK, WY, or MT. Whichever comes first... Another pre-war 06 has a G&H sidemount fitted with two separate Lyman and Leupold Alaskans-on G&H mts-as backups.

Fun topic. My favorite to shoot- 375 h&h and 220 swift
My favorite overall are a couple customs I have. 458 Lott by biesen and a 416 remington (not sure the smith on that one)
I also have a couple rebored to weatherby cartridges. 270 wby, 7mm wby, 300 wby. Those are all great hunting guns.
And after naming 7 i like, funny that the one im taking on the next hunting trip for moose is 338 win mag, which didn't make top 7.
The one I'd like to add is a 35 whelen, with a nice chunk of wood

I only own three Pre-64's, two are customs of unknown maker but finely done. This pre-war 270 Win. This 358 Win that has successfully been to Africa. The third is a 6.5x55 built by Dale Goens in the early 70's.

Pre '64 chamberings, hum... Sticking to original, 7mm Mauser and .338 Win Mag. If to deviate, maybe 9.3x62 as long as ammo availability not a concern. Rifle in 7mm, as a prewar w/clip guides! Perhaps "short rifle" length barrel. As the bigger bores, 338 or 9.3, a factory d&T of late forties as quality was at something of a peak! Stock as the regular low-comb Super Grade would be just fine. Recoil pad on the bigger bores please! 'If to deviate with that 20" short rifle barrel, maybe a Mannlicher stock! I have both such rifles in Super Grade stocks now, so not much wishing required. The 9.3 would be the exotic exception. If there is one thing I'd change on those great "Pre '64" genre, a hinged floorplate and "in trigger guard release mechanism ala Oberndorf Mauser! Thanks for the momentary "wishful" opportunity; especially as realizing largely "arrived"! Best! John

My two favorites are a 358 FWT and a 7MM carbine. At one time I owned every caliber in both std and fwt with the exception of the 300 & 458 magnums along with a couple SG's and a 22 Hornet carbine. I only have 3 now the two mentioned and a 270 FWT. I do lament the passing of the 22 Hornet carbine however.

The best Bi Polar response I can come up with is 7x57, .30/06, .375 and .458. Had them all, still have 3.

for me..270 win and 300 H&H Same here. Really enjoying the 300 lately. Such a good cartridge and works nice with plain old H4831. And the mighty 300 The 338 will always be near my favorite though. I’ll be trying the 124 grain Hammer Hunters this fall. My 270’s like it with H-4831sc, including my 1957 model 70.

Am I the only one with a 243? It has to be my favorite as it is the only one that I have at present.

Butchlambert1: NO... you are not the only one with a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in caliber 243 Winchester - I have 10 of them in my collection! Including Varmints, Featherweights and the rather rare Standard Rifle. And one of those 10 is a "customized" Varmint that a Custom Riflesmith friend of mine "attached" a pre-64 243 Varmint barrel onto a 1942 vintage action (serial #53XXX). This is one of the very few pre-64's I still shoot/Hunt with. And it is still capable of 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yards (calm day!)! Yeah love me some 243 pre-64 Model 70's. By the way don't you feel kind of naked with only ONE pre-64 Winchester Model 70? Enjoy that 243 - by the way which model is your Rifle? Long live the Riflemans Rifle. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
