I bought a Savage Youth model .243 about 10 years ago for my 5 Grandkids to use for deer hunting. One of my Grandsons loves that rifle and kept using it after he got a custom .270 from his uncle. He's 16 years old, 6' 2" tall and weighs 210 lbs. now but he still likes to shoot this .243. I got it back from him yesterday and plan to replace the barrel with a longer one and use a full size stock.

I forgot that the youth model Savages don't have a barrel nut. I already had a barrel and stock picked out but the new barrel requires a barrel nut. Can I remove the original barrel and use a barrel nut on this youth model action to install the new barrel?

I plan to swap it back when the great grandkids start showing up.

I didn't think the threading was the same but I'm sure someone who has experience with this can give a better answer. Great question, however.

Is there a reason that you want the longer barrel?

It's an older model but I don't knew what it was called.

I'll send you a picture of it. I recently replaced the barrel on my SIL's Rem 700 after a "gunsmith" sprayed Cerokote inside the action and on the barrel threads. They overtightened the barrel and stretched the threads so it had way too much backspace. It was very hard to remove the barrel because the Cerakot is a lot like red LOCTITE when you put it on threads.

I watched some videos about changing barrels on Savage rifles with the barrel barrel nut and it looked real simple. When I got this youth rifle back I expected to see a barrel nut but there is a just round spacer where the nut would be.

A Gun Smith should be able to put a barrel on it, just order it threaded for a Savage action with thread for a barrel nut.
You can order a barrel nut from Pacific Tool and Die in White City Oregon for around $30 or so.. Stainless or blued and sometimes they have ones that are colored in colors like Blue, or Red and other 'snappy' colors.

Most barrel makers can allow you the contour and length you want along with twist rate. Last one I did was in 6mm with a 1 in 7 twist. I chambered it in 6 x 45 ( 223 case ).. but I can shoot bullets from 55 grain to 115 grains out of it.

Another 6mm barrel with a one in 7 twist I have in 6mm Rem on a Model 700 Long Action. It shoots about ANY 6mm Bullet, regardless on how fast I push the MV.

It's an older model but I don't knew what it was called.

I bought it 7/1/2014 and found the owner's manual but it doesn't say what model it is but Model 10 is stamped on the barrel. They don't show a Model 10 in the manual but all the other rifles in the manual have a barrel nut. It has a matte black finish, a 20" barrel, removable magazine, Accutrigger (with the 3 position safety) and no sights other than the 3x9 Nikon scope it came with.

Thanks! I was wondering where to get a barrel nut if the barrel I want doesn't come with one. This is the barrel I want:

Northland Shooter Supply has all that you'll need to rebarrel a Savage. You can get the barrel nut wrench, barrel nut, as well as barrels through him.

There are other places, but NSS is great to deal with.

You can always use the nut that's already on the existing barrel.

Thanks. Don't you need an action wrench and a Go Gauge so you can torque the barrel?

The nut sets the torque. Just need a way to clamp the barrel.

I've got a Wheeler barrel clamp I just need to order new oak blocks. I crushed the oak blocks removing the barrel from my SIL's Rem 700.

How do you remove a nut like that? A Savage barrel nut wrench won't work. Big pipe wrench?

A pipe wrench will work if you're not worried about scarring up the nut. Or you can buy a Wheeler Barrel Nut Wrench.

Nothing wrong with Northland or their Criterian barrels. Another option is Shaw.

www.shawcustombarrels.com

This is my last order from Shaw. Three new SS barrels for a model 12. One in 22 creed, one in 6mm-284, and one in 6.5-284.

Yes, three completed barrels for a total of $762, including shipping to my door.

11818 $762.20 3 11/02/2023 09:06 pm Completed

Last year we used Shaw to rebarrel and reblue a Win model 70 in 7mm RM. My son is tickled pink with the resulting groups.

Savages aren't that expensive. Leave the youth model alone give a full size 243 to the grand kid. Save the youth model undisturbed for the great grandkids or you won't get it back. Tell him he has to play by the pre established rules like everyone else no favoritism. You asked and I told you. Mb

I decided it wasn't worth the trouble to do anything with this youth rifle because it's very accurate and I have already loaded 100 rounds for it with Lapua brass and Nosler bullets. I prefer stainless rifles anyway and Savage has a lot of good stainless models I can easily put a long barrel on.

Be advised that some Savage barrels are ridiculously hard to remove the first time. Partly because they use a gorilla to torque them down at the factory and partly because of the bluing salts (or whatever they are) that bind the threads. I bought a left hand Savage Axis in .270 Win that I wanted to turn into a .243 and it took a lot of pressure to break the barrel loose and then I had trouble getting the nut off the barrel.

That .270 was the only left hand rifle in an Academy store at the time. I worked there at the time and used my employee discount. I had swapped other barrels in the past and expected an easy time of it. I finally got the barrel off and sold it to a neighbor who had a .270 with a pitted chamber. After selling the factory barrel, I had a cheap action and stock for my .243 conversion. Later I got a deal on a .250 Savage barrel and swapped it out. That time was easy to remove.
