Running slabs with live edge is CRAZY FAST!!!
8-10 minutes per log.
All said and done... between the logs, mill time and local boys helping with the labor... 4/4 (plus and 1/8th) lumber came out cheaper than T1-11... or OSB.
Lotta fun... but did go thru a touch of bourbon to ease the back pain.
Even have a bunch over 21".
B&B mostly... some 9/4 as plank flooring and some 13/4 for rafters.
We will move and stick on the mountain once the roads are passable.

Leonard, are those boards headed to a kiln, or just stacked and stickered? Those were some great looking logs! I have always heard that stickering/air drying is good for about an inch thickness per year, in good conditions.

What kind of wood is that? I could use a bunch of that, looks great! White Pine 100% for me. Best logs out of a 40 acre cut. Bill held back a couple dozen 12 footers for his needs. He ran a combo of WP, Bull Pine and Hemlock. In the South we call it SYP, but they call it Bull... FYI, mathematically it is 18% stronger than WP... I reckon that is why. Hemlock is a weird wood. I had never messed with it before. Under $0.50 a BF to make this lumber... It is good to have friends that log.

I have always heard that stickering/air drying is good for about an inch thickness per year, in good conditions. That one year per inch is a general rule for hardwoods, but stickered properly on our mountain... WP should be G2G by June/July. The 9/4 planking... is more of a "we will see" kinda thing. Great sun and wind on the mountain... but the roads are nasty right now... lost a dump truck of milling in a ditch on Tuesday... gonna take the dozer to get her out I reckon. Slit frost melt/rain.

We have Bull Pine (yellow pine) here too, I used it for board and batton siding on my house, also when I was working at the mill we used to make railroad ties and similar stuff, I never want to lift any of it again lol.
White Pine here too, scarce though, I don't know much about it, smells great.
Hemlock, we have alot of it, but when it gets bigger 3ft+, it seems to rot and is often used for pulp. When I was falling steady we would log entire blocks for pulp, it was the most dangerous bush to work in, sometimes you just started to cut a tree and it would start to fall. The smaller stuff was always sound, makes great lumber, I think it is often used for windows.

He said he would lose more as it dried. He told me it is a sheathing product ONLY... i.e. never vertical load Hemlock. I have no idea about Hemlock personally.
