Soft G, like the Gillet razor, right?
In the service, drill sergeants, most NCOs for that matter pronounced my last Name Two distinct words. Old Ham!šŸ˜€
Thereā€™s a ton of us in this area, and everybody pronounces it Oldem or Oldum.
British name, Manchester or nearabouts.
If you listen to a British folks talk, Oldham, Rockingham and even Buckingham are pronounced like that. U sound instead of Ham.

Hard ā€œGā€ like in ā€œgoodā€, not like in Geo or Gillette.

Interesting how pronunciation goes in various cultures.

Youā€™d think a Senator would have figured out how to say a witnessā€™ name, especially a 4 star general.

After that guy, the others seem to do better. The general was gracious, did not correct them, probably used to people butchering his name after decades in the military.

He seems like a gracious guy, comes from gracious people. Iā€™ve not met the general, just his forebearers.

I did send him a text some years ago, asking about his Dad. Iā€™m sure he was too busy to mess with me, although I told him in some detail who I was and my connection with his Dad and folks. I know heā€™d be way too busy now.
