Here in Michigan we only have one type of venomous snake, eastern massasauga rattler, and they are uncommon, except my lab seems to find them easily. This is second time he has been bitten in the last 3 years. Both times it happened when things were warming up. Mi. rattlers move to higher ground in the fall to hibernate and have little ones, so I think they're hibernating in my field stone retaining wall (on the south side of the house) and that's where his crossing paths with them. retaining wall Is there any type of repellent that I can use to deter snakes from taking up winter residence there? Sometimes snakes are attracted to mice, rats, frogs. Ensure that you don't have any of those, perhaps.

Careful with the mothballs. Some are really bad for dogs. Ask me how I know that.

A dog that eats mothballs?
Sheesh
Put him in the circus
Never heard of that
My labs would eat lettuce way before munching on a mothball. lol
But hey German Shepherds eat their own and each other’s shît so there’s that.

Best snake repellent I know of. 4' coral snake....(that's pretty damn big) shot it by the front porch as the dogs were playing around it. Hate copperheads! 4 of my 5 dogs have been bitten, despite snake training. I don't think they can see them until it's too late. Once they spot a snake, the training kicks in and they alert and stay away. They blend in too well for my liking. I think I killed about 15 or so last year around the house.

2 coral snake deaths in a 100 years means they arenot particularly dangerous, but still
The only true cost of having a dog is its death.

The bastards, my dog got hit in the face a couple of years ago by a copperhead. She turned out alright but she had better days!

Evidence there you went to the renegade 50 school of photography. And that you've got at least three different pairs of shoes/boots.

I’m pretty surprised that you have snakes in Michigan that are out of hibernation. I haven’t seen the first one so far this year.
I haven’t had any success with the commercial snake repellents. I actually had a black snake slither right through some that I put on the sill plate of my outbuilding.
