I have been legally gifted an old Savage 440A (56XXX) in rusted poor condition. Top lever was frozen, barrel rusted, etc. Using Kroil and vinegar, the top lever has been freed, and now the action has been completely disassembled. The plan is to thoroughly clean each part, replace the springs and reassemble. I have worked on a number of guns in the past but not an old O/U shotgun. I have the Numrich exploded parts diagram but could really use a video or some sort of additional guidance on reassembly. I realize that I may have to go to a gunsmith but want to check you all first on any reassembly guidance. Thank you.

I haven’t messed with the 440a but have played with a 440b.
I can tell you that I had issues with that gun. It had aftermarket forend and butt stock. Ended up needing the inertia block and I do not remember all else. It was a money pit. But I did lime the feel of that gun. All said and done I could have bought a used Browning Citori for the same $ invested.
Now as to reassemly its been many years since I worked on that gun. I believe like you, I only had the parts diagram. I have some disasemby books that I will check to see if your gun is listed.

I did not find any info in my disassembly books
I more than likly worked of a schematic.
