Anyone catch the story of the mountain lion attack in California last week?

This caught my eye and I've been pissed for an hour:

"Meanwhile, the deputies searched the area until they found the cat, who was crouching near Taylen’s body. Not knowing whether Taylen was alive or dead, the deputies fired their guns in a safe direction, which scared the lion away." (taken from Meateater article by Jordan Sillers)

WTH is that? "Crouching near" is not the same as crouching over, close to, or any other reason not to shoot the lion. The lion was later trapped and killed but why would a person not immediately shoot the cat? WHY???

The fallacy underlying the whole mountain lion thing is ridiculous. Estimates vary but ~ 100 cats are killed each year by depredation permits. I can't find stats to determine how many were killed by "sport hunting" prior to the 1991 ban but it can't be that many more. Add to this total the 535 killed by cars over the past years and you end up with ~ 175 cats killed per year. A. why do we pay people to kill them on depredation permits?, B. They apparently no longer have fear of man.

If I was the family of the dead boy, I'd strongly consider a lawsuit against the State for failing to protect its citizens from predators and the acts of the deputies that arrived on the scene. Money won't bring back the boy but a change in how predators are managed may enhance the chances of future people out/about in the woods.

We also need to pay attention in Colorado - they have a ballot box biology initiative (remember the wolf initiative a few years ago) to ban "trophy hunting" of mountain lions, bobcats and lynx (really??). If you read the legislation it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see they can substitute mountain lion/bobcat/lynx for mountain goat, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, etc.

Its time to get off our wallets and act..........

CA. Mountain Lion are a sacred species in CA. Nobody wanted to take responsibility for popping it.

I’ve read several articles on it.
The fact the dumbazz deputies didn’t kill the lion right there blows my mind…….

And yes, if predators aren’t hunted they consider us prey rather than predator.

Wildlife view humans and other critters as prey, or predator, or competitor.

We should be able to choose who we are.

The fact that the cat was not immediately killed is unbelievable…….but then, most everything done in Kalifornia is unbelievable. memtb

We have a problem now with bears. They have absolutely no fear of man here. They are going in people’s houses, attacking pets.

And this state is full of Bambi saving libtards that absolutely will NOT allow a season on them. I have read a couple reports of people attacked. Someone is going to get hurt bad, and they still will protest a bear season.

You can’t fix stupid!

We have issues with bears in the Smokys. Zero fear of humans. A couple people per year get chewed on, not fatal very often but getting chewed can't be all that fun.
