Probably. But there was so much crazy stuff coming out of the factory during that period who knows?

If the buttstock looked it fit halfway decent, I'd definitely think it was a 1980's gun made up from parts on the shelf and sent out. Or one an employee made for themself.
But it's a lousy fit.
So.. Might be factory parts gun, or a 99CD that was rebarreled/restocked.
99C/99CD receiver (1978), 99E barrel (1982-1984), late 99E stock (1981-1984)
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Agree late 99E stock/forearm, 99C or CD receiver. That's the first 99E stamped 250 Sav barrel I have ever seen (other than those two pre-60 early 99Es). The CD 250s had a 3 row barrel address; this barrel has a 2 row barrel address.
Agree, factory parts gun would be a good guess,

The 99E was catalogued in 250 the last couple years it was made in 1980’s. Ridiculously rare tho.

What going on with the tang on that gun? Pretty sloppy for factory work. But that doesn't mean it didn't come from the factory that way in the 1980s. I think QC standards were relaxed when they were struggling to survive. I call that one a coin flip as to its originality.

His wife told him he was crazy to go there. Everyone thought they were going under.

That gun is a head scratcher.

It was NIB, so I think that it was factory original. I bought it at Corey's in Littleton, NH, some time before 04/90. I sold it years ago via the old GUNLIST.

Yeah, I have a 1987 99C in 308 with 99C walnut stock from the early 80's, and with a 99E plastic buttplate on it. The wood is actually pretty nice, but it's all factory. Just.. parts gun.
