4 or 5" mostly. I have access to too much wood to mess around with beer can size stuff. 6-8" and above I split. It dries better, burns better. Indoor, wood/coal furnace, thermostat draft control, natural draft(no fan).
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!
You eastern pilgrims wouldn't know Winter if it bit you in your puzzy flaps.
Nuff said, just sayin'.
Yeppers! I know 'zackly what winter is! That's why I live down here instead of up there! I've gone to work in -30°F temps and waded crotch deep snow to get to a job site.
If'n YOU wanna live up there? Fine by me! I stay down here where split red oak firewood is available and a 20°F day is a cold motor scooter!
Actually, where we live in Oklahoma, we've seen vehicle high snow drifts and -12°F temps!
P.S. - Lot'sa folks think snow is pretty! "I" don't!

Winter is milder in Montanas banana belt than it is here. While I haven't experienced temperatures below -25 here, I have experienced 4' of snow in one storm and 5" of snow on mothers day..
By the way, can we have some out-west fouck refer to kindling as kenneling just to argue how superior they are for burning only conifers and never venturing further east than pocatello? And the Earff is onlee 6fth thosaunds yeer olt
Hey Slummy,
What you talki'n 'bout? Are you saying there is something East of Pocatello?
Damn! A guy can learn something new everyday around this place.
People who choose to brew up their own storms bitch loudest about the rain.
looks like everybody's giving you pretty good advice on size. I'll just add this. if you've got a big stash of firewood already cut and you do not have room to store it at least under roof. and it's going to be a few years before you would use what you're going to accumulate on the project I would leave them in longer log form backed up somewhere . I think the wood keeps better that way been cut it into the stick size a little before you need it.

I asked because I've seen people from Bozeman and Billings incorrectly claim that they live in the Banana Belt. I live around the Elliston area just a mile from the Divide and we get some pretty cold winters here, -35 degrees isn't unusual (that's not including any wind chill).
I wish we had hardwood around here, it would cut down the amount of wood cutting I have to do every year. My house is a 30 year old log home that needs a lot of upgrades and we burn about 6 cords a year, our coldest year required 8 cords. As a result we burn any wood we can get, including the little stuff but I don't bother splitting it unless it's at least 12 inches in diameter. i only split the 12 inch wood once. If the wood is around 24 inches then I'll split it twice.
