I used Taxact software for 15 years or so. They got to be pretty greedy with fees, and the format was confusing for me.
I switched to HR Block a couple years ago, and since we don't have any mortgage or other complications, we can use the simple 1040. With HR Block, the format seems pretty easy for me, and it is free for both the federal and the state forms. I think it takes 15 minutes or so. The only "catch" is HR Block is a spammer, so I have stuff like that go to my "junk" email account. They even offer free electronic filing, but I do hard copy. Naturally they even offer immediate refund payment, with a fee.
As a side comment, I was getting racked with taxes because both my wife and I work. I retired early, and we now get back pretty big money. My 403B automatically takes out 20%, so we get a fair chunk of that back. So for me, it really does not pay to work with a good 403B. PA/local does not tax 401K/403B income.

Can you have your 403B take out less than 20% so you can get to no return or a slight owe?

I have TIAA CREF, and the only option is 20%. I thought it was kinda my obligation to do an estimate, and try for exact payment, but that is not an option.
I am going to submit a small pension from my first job, and I can take 0% on that one. Confusing that the pension has federal deduction options, but the 403B does not. I'll guess that TIAA is making coin of the deducted amount.
