both are excellent cartridges BUT the 30-06 cartridge is so simple to find ammo for any place in the world rather you like it not its just a old simple cartridge /30-06 that is easy to find ammo or reloading components for . doesn`t mean its our personal favorite cartridge its just a fact the old 30-06 has been around so long and an easy to find favorite in the world to use. Looking at ballistics the 280 is better hands down....even better once you get past 500/600 yards in experienced shooter.
Your average Joe, that doesn't shoot past 200/300 yards. The 06 is the best all around hand down.
Availability, price, bullet variety.
06 is world champ of versatility

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

My take: If you're a handloader and have lots of brass, go with the 280. If not, go with the '06. Better get one of each and take turns!

Remember what Col. Whelen said, "The .30'06 is never a mistake." But he also said, "Can it be improved on? I think it can....just a bit." When writing about the "new" .280 Remington.

I have quite a few 30-06’s. Three 280’s and one 280AI. All that are 700’s shoot sub-minute groups with bullets that should work well with elk.
I’ve shot more game with the 30-06 because that was the only (other than a short ownership of a 264) full size rifle I had for many years. I also had a 350 in 600 configuration but that isn’t an all around combination. I had a Mauser 98 7mm I reamed to 280 - not recommended - but it shot 160 grain SPEER mag-tips well.

I’m thinking of taking the 280 to fill an elk tag if I get one this year. Maybe use it on white tail too. I applied for quite a few tags but some are almost never in a lifetime lucky draws.

I don’t see much advantage with the AI, though there is maybe 50fps advantage. My 280AI has a heavier 26” barrel. If I hadn’t read some good print on the cartridge I would have left it 280.

Now to decide on which bullet. Leaning towards partitions though.

Deciding on which one cartridge is “better” - ha ha. They are all good. The 270 is almost as good as any three! I have three of those too.

I prefer classic.
