As a resident of NY, I applied for a NR tag 20 years in a row. I finally hit a few years back. I've taken a few good bulls in Newfoundland but always wanted to get a bull with my 45-70 in a heavily wooded area. Maine provided that opportunity. I wasn't selected for a tag in one of the better areas up north but was just excited to get out and hunt. On the second day, I tagged an average bull. My hunt was short but sweet.

Who in the hell-suffering tom cats would spend a dime in maine with their new gun laws?

Someone who wants to hunt moose and it’s the only reasonable option for them.

Maine, New Hampshire and VT are all reasonable, if you can get drawn.

It's wrong but not like Colorado or Oregon or something.

Let's ask this another way. If you wanted to go Moose hunting, without waiting 2+ decades to draw a tag where would you go?

Newfoundland.

Or contact a Maine outfitter with a tag to sell. Not cheap as I understand. But the success rates are very high.
Or get in the lottery and see what happens. I've been a subpermitte twice , drawn twice, my wife has drawn once. And with the points system I am scheduled to get another tag when I turn 65.
It's just luck.

Canada and Maine outfitter tags are no cure for SlickLizard's reticence to spend $$ where the gun-laws are unfriendly, so that whole country is out, as is all of Europe.

If I had my druthers it would be the September hunt for a bull in Zone 1.

I did that in Vermont 20 years ago

My sister in law drew the first time she applied, did the waiting period and drew again the first time. She has not applied since.

I got super lucky and drew a tag with 6 pts back in 2013.Ended up with a beautiful 52”bull. Keep applying, someone has gotta draw a tag.

I put in for points again this year, total of 24 now. I"'ll have over 30 before age 65. The goal is to get a permit on my terms when I want it.

I’ve drawn 3 times, have been subpermittee several times, and manual labor on numerous hunts. The best hunts are 2-3 people on your terms with the clusters being the gang hunts. Glad I have done all but like you it is on my terms now in the zones and seasons I want.

My last permit was for the adaptive hunt. It was difficult with long days and a fairly long pack out. But it was a hunt and was fun. We had an absolute giant bull within 50-60 yards. They are still out there
I would not take an adaptive hunt permit again for a variety of reasons.

I have a small cabin here in zone 3 . I can very reasonably hunt moose from it on foot. And I plan to do a spot and stalk in a traditional hunting manor. And I will use an 1895 in 405. That's the plan so far anyway.

In. Maine Moose is tasty & I’ve got great friends that all applied. Even if I don’t draw, helping another hunter is an honor.
