My neighbors have a very clean white Toyota pickup in 2 wheel drive they want to sell. Two wheel drives aren't exactly in demand around here and its a basic standard cab but he told me he'd sell it to me for $3500. The good part is it's only got 80,000 original miles. He bought it a about 2 years ago from our other neighbors who moved here from northern California. It doesn't have any rust and they say it drives great.

My wife is already saying no but I know those old 2.4 liter Toyota 4 cylinders go for ever. My oldest will be able to drive in 3 years and wants to mow lawns in the summer so I think.its the perfect truck for that. It's hard to find book values on a truck that old but I think it's a deal at $3500. I'm going to go drive it tomorrow. Does it sound like a deal?

That’s even older than my ‘95 taco. I wouldn’t pay over $2K.

$3500 is fair if it’s decent condition with 80k.

A clean California '92 Toyota pickup, with only 80k miles is fairly priced at $3500, and is a great find. Though you might try to haggle with the seller.

Way under valued IMO at least for my area. I have a 94 Toyota pickup (pre Tacoma). It is in good shape, no rust because it has been in GA its whole life, and has 145k miles. I get offered $5000 just about every time I go to Home Depot. I’d need $10,000 for me to let it go because I like it that much. It saves miles and gas on my Tundra. BUY IT!

It’s a unique vehicle due to condition and mileage. It will probably sell for his asking price. $3500 is just not that much money. Buy it if you want to. I would.

Good basic truck...

It will be worth what you pay... forever.

Like a 12 valve or a 7.3... They simply hold their value... forever.

Fuel injected 22R may be the most durable engine ever built.

Have 4 Toys parked out front and I'd buy this one for that price.

I would buy it but might offer less depending on whether I liked them as neighbors or not.

if the truck is in the condition that you say it is, not rusted and banged up, 3500 is a good price. Try to get it for 3K I think you got a good deal. Specially if your son is going to do lawns with it he’ll make that back in one season. Change oil and air on a regular basis you’ll get a lot years out of the truck. Get some pictures if you can, keep us updated.

Dad bought a new '92 2WD 22RE in '92. It had A/C but that was about it. I think he gave $8K for it t the time. I had an '89 std cab 4x4 with the 22RE. New, it was $10K. How times have changed.

That truck is worth every bit of $3,500. Perform regular maintenance and it'll outlast you.

It amazes me how well Toyota pickups retain their resale value.I've been driving a 22yr old Tundra I bought new and another 22yr old I bought about 4yrs ago. Both are still great trucks and I have no desire for a new one. Here are some Tacoma listings I found.Their prices are shocking on some of them.If you have a chance of getting one with 80k miles on it at a good price you might want to jump on it.

Those 4 cylinders will go a long while. I look at it like how many dollars per mile will this cost me to drive vs. something else? You will be driving that truck for a very long time. The downside to a 92 is that some parts will only be available on the used market should he need them. Mechanical parts like the speedometer may quit eventually and not be repairable but otherwise keep on truckin.

Sidenote on Toyota dependability-

I bought my wife a new Camry hybrid in 2013. When the youngest went to college we gave it to him with about 150K miles on it. He's now graduated college as a doctor in physical therapy, and is still driving that car with almost 300,000 miles on it. He spent very little on the car all those years and it's still helping him get his life established. Considering the financial circumstances young people face nowadays, how can they afford to drive anything but a Toyota?

Another plus is ""you can work on it yourself"" that's a big reason why vehicles like this Toyota are holding their value.
Stealerships charging $100 - $150hr. for crap work.

I spent 6 hours yesterday changing out the passenger side [4] spark plugs/[4] coils + a mild cleaning on the fuel injectors. 20+ years old F-150 5.4. absolute PITA to maintain. The drivers side will take more time- remove air-box - power steering reservoir -egr plumbing -pvc -fuel line - other stuff that I don't even know what it is.

What else could you get for $3500 that would be equivalent for miles and dependability?

Ain't that the truth. Before I bought my Toyota,I have always driven Ford pickups. My last one was a 1997.I absolutely hated that half the engine was stuffed under the fire wall.Spark plugs were a PITA ,especially the rear passenger side.Never again,Ford lost me.I really didn't like their "Better Ideas".At 22yrs old,I can get more money for my Toyota than I could get for any of my five year old Fords.I can change the oil and spark plugs in 30 minutes on my V-8 Tundra. It must really be a nightmare to be a mechanic on some of these hard to work on vehicles.A simple job should be just that,a simple job. When you design a vehicle to make everything difficult to work on,it's total BS in my opinion.

This.

Here under 2k won't buy anything that runs. It will have major damage until you get to 3k.

I look at miles and overall condition/maintenance a lot more than I do year. That truck should have years and years of low cost use ahead of it. Either that or your 16 year will destroy it doing teenager stuff😂

I'd snap it up now.

And keep it for myself. Get the teenager something that looks and runs like something a teenager would drive, as your nice vehicle will end up looking like that in short order.

If I had that around here, it would be my going to the Big Town ride when the wife needs the RAV4 that day, and use it around here for going and getting supplies in town, like bales of straw, rolls of fencing and such. Retire the 23 year old Tacoma to hunting and fishing duties only.

Wish I had never sold the 86 Toyota 2wd we had for years. Decided to help out an acquaintance when I picked up the Tacoma.

Based on being in ID, that is probably not worth $3500.

Were it me for what you are planning on doing with it, I would consider $2250 to be fair. ANd may be willing to pay up to $2500 - 2700.

Take that thing south and it's probably worth $3500 all day long. But in ID, don't think so.

I sold my ‘87 4x4 with 90,000 miles about 3 months ago for 16k.
If you need a small truck it’s a pretty good buy I think.

'Bout 6 yrs ago...

Came across a local.......one owner......'91 pickup.........3.0L V6 ( cry) & 4x4 & manual

Guy said it needed a fuel pump...been sittin' for 4 yrs----------180K miles

He says.........I want $500 & not a penny less...OK...couldn't get in my pocket fast enough...yes clean UT title

Towed it to my mechanic bud's place...Dumped $1900 into it....tires/wheels included...all the baseline items

G/son from AZ came up & drove it 9 hrs home...so we had $2400 in it

92 Toy w/ 80K for $3500? In a heartbeat, all day, any day. Unless maybe it has AT.

At 80K, I would replace the clutch and turn the flywheel, just because. I would replace the Timing chain guides, and take a good look at the chains while I was in there.

THEN, the truck should run forever.

But if it does not, Jasper builds 22RE engines with a 50,000 mi/five year warranty. I do not think I have ever seen a Toyota five speed trans fail, And I have driven many of them well beyond 300K.

If I was close to you, I'd buy it, and I don't even need a truck! Those are 300,000 miles vehicles if you take basic care of them. I had a buddy that commuted that put 360,000+ on his, and he sold it because it got too ugly for his wife! It was still going.

I went and checked it out tonight. It actually has 100,000 miles on it not 80k. It is very clean though with just a few smaller dings on it. It has a plastic bed liner in it and from what I could see under it. Interior is good under the aftermarket seat cover.

It's a real basic model and doesn't even have air but it does also come with the original wheels with another set of tires on it. It has some basic aftermarket aluminum rims in it now. My 12 year old boy likes it even though he's 3 years from learning to drive it. My wife thinks we have too many vehicles already but I'm trying to convince her we need one with a standard transmission for the kids to learn on. The battery was completely dead so my neighbor put a charger on it so I can drive it later. I'm going to offer him $3000.

Bb, is it a 4 speed?

I bought my Grandpas Toyota base model, am/fm radio, no a/c, "4 speed" not 5. 90-91? model. Back in 1996 drove it daily when I was building houses - sold it for $1500 more than I paid.

I've been on the lookout for one of the last model years 'standard cab' 4x4 , 2011-2015, >hard to find a nice one.

Good Luck

These lowball prices are funny. It is going to cost me 1500 just to fix the ac in my daughter's car (a 2010 Ford Focus with 100k, we just bought for 3400). 3500 is small beans for a running vehicle.

Like, what else can one buy with 100K on the meter for less than $10,000?

The brand new ones will get no better mileage. The year of production is pretty meaningless in this situation.

A 32 year old Toyota 2 wheel drive is “worth” whatever the seller is asking as long as you have that much in your pocket. That’s today’s America.

X2

I’ve never been into insulting lowball offers. Especially not a neighbor. Figure out what you think it’s worth and offer on the fair lower end of that range and haggle a bit from there or just pay what he ask for it if you feel like it’s fair.

$3500 for a well taken care of truck is already a fair offer IMO.

So, how much is a Jasper rebuilt 22RE motor going for these days?

Not sure about that engine but the other I was looking at 2.7L ones for my '01 tacoma and they seemed to be running about $3600 for a long block as I recall.

Don't need one, but was thinking it might be a good idea to have a spare handy. Also that about looking for a junker version of my truck to use for parts when necessary. Some are already showing up as unavailable new. Sad for a vehicle that's only 23 years old.

Once you own a Toyota you will always own one or wish you still did.

My daily driver is a 93 with the 3.0 (not the best engine Toyota ever built) with 280K, nothing but oil changes and timing belts.

This is true. If I had millions, I might have a nice sporty car in the garage. But parked next to it will be a Toyota of some form. If I had that kind of money, it would be a fully restored FJ-40 instead of my Tacoma though.

Lacking that kind of $$$, there's still going to be a Toyota in the garage. The wife used to laugh that I parked my 2002 Tacoma in the garage, and left the BMW out in the driveway. Because I knew the Toyota would be here years from now. The B(reak) M(y) W(allett)...not so much. Similar road feel and drivability, but dependability was complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Owned the BMW for 5 years, had it carted away on a tow truck and donated it. Had the Toyota for over 20 years and 245k miles, and sold it for better than half what I paid for it.

Love driving BMW's, hate owning one. Toyotas....love driving and owning.

To the OP: Did you end up getting the truck?
