I have a question, and I hope yall can help.
I don't want to start a ford vs. Chevy thread, so here goes. Is it me or is on paper (ballistics) and at the range, the 300wby out performs the 300rum? Is there any advantages to a rum over a wby besides factory ammo price? I currently own a wby, but was really considering a custom 300 rum. Am I considering a lesser caliber? I really enjoy what my whby is capable of and I am a real sucker for a hard hitting 30. I would plan on shooting 180 nosler PT's or AB's. Reloading ammo for both is available as well.

Intended purposes of said rig?

I have owned two 300RUMs and a 300WBY and loaded for another two 300RUMs and one more 300WBY.The simple fact is that Weatherby factory loads are loaded to higher pressures than Remington,so factory loads perform about the same if not slightly in the Weatherby's favor.Using Handloads however,the 300 RUM is able to gain 100fps to 125fps over the 300WBY in the guns that I loaded for with 180gr bullets.

General hunting rig. Occasional long range hunting. Big game elk, caribou, maybe moose or bear. It would be built to carry up one side of a hill and down the other. I hunt in an area that has a lot of possibilities for 500+ yard shots. But in general, an all around north american game rifle.

I would take a RUM over a Weatherby any day of the week!

That said, I'd encourage you to keep running your 300 Wby and save the moolah and put it into a hunt.

Unless your going to go big I'd keep what you got. You will gain velocity, but if your used to your Weatherby, I hate to say it but you might as well stick with it. If you want to go big, Weatherby 30-378 or bigger Lazzeroni 7.82 Warbird.

At the velocities they both give, I can't imagine one being significantly better than the other on anything.....they are both very potent, flat-shooting cartridges, suitable for almost anything that walks.

I did notice that the Weatherby is a bit easier to manage, at least in the rifles I've owned for each.

I had a 300 Jarrett DGS built last year on a Weatherby Mark 5 action,it was 300 Weatherby.We used a finished 27 in. Kreiger Rem Sendero 5.5 contour barrel and a 2in. Gentry muzzle break,after barrel break in it shot consecutive 3 shot groups of .296 and .312 in. at 100 yds. using 165 GR.NBT'S chrono'd at 3489-3407 fps.I'd rather have this caliber over 300 Weatherby anyday,but that's just me.

Critter: Well, yeah....it's no doubt a good one. But I mean there are a lot of ways to get a 180 to 3200; a 165 to 3300 or 3400. I doubt it matters from the standpoint of killing game... That's my point.

You could hunt the next 30 years with all the 300's and you'd never see a difference. What one will do, the others of similar capacity will do....

I had a custom 300Wby finished last year got rid of the freebore headspaced on the shoulders instead of the belt and it's a good shooting rifle alittle faster than my factory 300Wby, about what I'm getting from a factory 300RUM using 180gr bullets. I reload for both so my cost isn't that bad and I haven't shot the 300RUM alot this year I'm going to try some 200gr bullet. When your looking at barrels/twist/bullet/powder etc in the custom end it would be hard for me to pick one over the other since I would build them for different bullet weights. Well good luck

I hunted with 300WBY for along time and liked it alot. Killed lots of stuff with it. Came upon a great deal on a Winchester model 70 classic in 300RUM and gave it a try. The rifle has been very deadly and on Elk, Black Bear, Kudu, Eland, Zebra and lots of other stuff over the past three years and I have been very impressed. I use a 180TSX at about 3350 fps. BUT...... the danged thing is LOUD! And, I am not at all sure the extra 100-150fps is worth the noise. I have been contemplating re-barreling it to 300WBY. 30grs less powder per load, less noise and I am thinking that a 180TSX at 3200fps will, as we say, git 'er done. As a current 300RUM user and lover, I say go 300WBY. If you need more than that, you need a 340 or a 375 of some persuasion. (I have those, too )

I don't think I build a 300 Run. I had a 300 Win. Mag. in a 26 barrel. It was shooting with the 300 Weatherby 180 grains NAB and 72.5 of H100 at 3200 fps. I load for a young man and his 300 RUM shoots well at 3250, fatser than that groups go from 3/4 inch to way over an inch fast. Now that being all said, Go for it! A custom gun is what your after, build it in the Rum. I build Custom Guns all the time. Just put a 28 tube on it where it will really shine.

Of course that varies from rifle to rifle,and with the particular load.The three groups below were fired one after the other out of one of my 300RUMs.The velocity with a 180gr bullet is 3350fps out of a 26" barrel.With the 180gr tsx driven at 3380fps,the same rifle averages 5/8".Faster does not mean less accurate.

good stuff! I will do a custom for sure, but i just dont want to spend bundle of money on something that is less or just barely equal to my 300wby. On the noise level, i definitely agree mine has a muzzle brake

Mostly personnel opinion, but I detest Weatherby guns, dont like free bore and Weatherby brass cost a arm and a leg.
Performance wise they are about the same with a 100
+ fps advantage to the RUM. The RUM also doesn't have a belt, which isn't a issue for me, but for some it apparently is.
As for the noise. IME both the wtby and the rum are pretty dang loud. I cant tell much of a difference between the two.

I can, but YMMV. 300WBY / no brake is no big deal when out hunting. 300RUM rings my ears but good every time. Every ones ears are different, this is my experience.

I have have a .300 RUM Rem. Sendero and I love this combination for the clearcut. I really would make my decision on your own personal choice. There just isn't any real difference between the two rounds. I would be happy with either.

I have hunted with a 300 Wby and loaded for them. I don't see how it is necessary to push a 180 gr bullet any more than 3200 honest fps.
