I had two huge questions for them: why did they never remember to get mosquito dope, and why did they not get better clothing for the 70 below weather conditions? smile

The book "Grizzlies and White Guys" by Clayton Mack, has some eye-opening revelations about how one of the most prominent British pioneers got his start, at least from the Indian perspective.

Clayton Mack was a top bear guide around Bella Coola, was he not?

Saw it a few yrs back, it impressed me and for a bit made me wish I was still unmarried and without children so I could venture there...

Yes, he guided around the Bella Coola area. He did an "American Sportsman" guiding Rick Jason (the LT from the old TV series "Combat!) on a grizzly hunt. The book is hilarious, written in a narrative style by a health care worker who taped many hours of conversation with him.

Dick Proenneke was quite the guy, I met him several times and my father visited him often in the 70's and 80's.
Dick didn't care much for hunters in 'his' wilderness. He did whatever he could to discourage hunting in the area until it became a nat'l Monument, then a nat'l park. I'm not trying to slam the guy, he was very talented, but......
he did his best to keep people from doing what he was doing, living in the bush. He homesteaded in late 60's, cleared a cabin site, cut trees, then did what he could to make that illegal. Truthfully, he saw lots of unethical hunting going on in the twin lakes area. He cleaned up alot of messy campsites, he 'removed' some run down cabins. He was quite the guy.....

AlaskaJim,

Curious to who your father is?
I just finished reading "More Readings From One Man's Wilderness: The Journals of Richard L. Proenneke 1974-1980" and found it to be a facinating read. Wonder if he mentions him in his journals?
I have hunted moose in the area that he refers to as "Island Mountain" over near Snipe Lake. Beautiful country.

I am a handcrafted custom log home builder and loved watching Dick build his home. I wonder if I'd be building log homes if I had to use the tools he used. Great show (one mans wilderness) I look forward to reading the book.

I gotta wonder though? 35 yrs alone? If it were me, that float plane that brought him supplys would been an escort service also!!

Dose anyone know what caliber his rifle was in the show??

His rifle was a .30-06 and he had a S&W .357. I sat with a magnifying glass and studied the pictures in the book, that's not how I know about the firearms he does mention them in the book. Guess it's about time to re-read it. There was another book by a guy who went into Dillingham in the 30's and trapped in the Tickchick (sp?)Lake area. It was an interesting read and I loaned it to someone and never got it back. If anyone knows the name and author of it I'd like to get another copy of it. I bought a copy in Anchorage at a Borders Bookstore. CH

I loved the book, but haven't seen the movie yet. I will to stop by the library and see if they have it. I read the book on the young fellas that did the yukon float and luckily found the movie on that one at the Kenai library---so maybe luck will strike twice and they will have this one as well. His photography was awesome.

Did the movie include any of his late night escapades with the wolverine?
