I have a friend offering to sell me one of these. Can I shoot 44 magnums out of this rifle as well?

No, the head and rim dimensions are different between the 44 Magnum and the 444 Marlin. You would likely get ruptured cases and the rifle's throat would be in jeopardy of damage as the bullet sailed down the chamber unsupported for about an inch.

A friend of mine has one of the new stainless laminated stock Marlins in .444. and it is a great gun. That thing is a blast to shoot and it hits the deer like a hammer.

IIRC Cartridges of the Worls many editions ago indicated that .44-40 would work. Maybe someone else has heard?

Owning a 444 since 1981, I have tried 44 Rem Mag rounds in mine to see if there would be any problems and there wasn't.. but I wasn't testing for accuracy...

but I also found out hand loading...

you can use 44 Rem Mag load data for the 444, and you will pretty much get the exact same velocities from the 444...

so if that is what you are looking for, just load the 444 to the 44 Mag's load data..

I find applications in that, and it also really can stretch out the 444's brass life, since the pressure is dramatically lower..
