I came across a Savage 29, I think that right, its the pump 22.

What are these going for? And can I get a tang peep for it?

If any of you have any pics of the gun and peep that would be great.

Thanks

PP

Hi there!

First order of business, is it a 29A or 29B? There is a thread about the A, and somewhere else in this forum I posted pics of a B.

I also remember finding a guide to vintage Lyman sights, the Lyman code you want to look for is...

SM - Savage Models 1903, 1909, 1912, 1914, 25 & 29, Meriden Models 10 & 15, Mossberg Model K & Stevens Model 75

Since I have a 1903 that came with a Marbles tang sight, I can tell you with confidence that their code for the same family of rifles is "S2"

Check out some of my previous posts here, you will find pictures of the Marbles S2 in some of them as well as a source for screws.

All but the 29B's were drilled and tapped for a tang sight. They are accurate and fun shooters. Just picked up a 29B that is not in the below photos and I don't have the 1909, but there are 1903's in different factory versions, 1914's and 1925 and two 29's. Ryan

The one I found is like the 5th one down. Almost not fair for one guy to have so many nice guns Ryan.

Thanks for posting the pics and the info.

Someone explain to me where the #30 tang sight came from for the model 29. Were they standard for the 29 I've got my #30 on or were they for an earlier variation? Also, did Savage have these made by themselves as the #30's weren't stamped with any markings?

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

Haha, no, it's a Montreal Home Guard spoon. Engraved with A. Whipp, April 1915 in the center. Just another knick knack on the desk. But enough about it, I don't wanna get off topic.

I would think its a Marbles or Lyman, kinda hard to believe Savage would make there own peeps.

MD, the #30 and its single leaf rear sight, #31, were not listed till the 1935 catalog. The rifle with the special sights was listed as the 29-S. The last listing was in 1941. The 1942 catalog states that the 29 was D&T'ed for the #30 but the 29-S is nolonger listed.

I would guess that the sight was a Savage creation to get a piece of the special sights market but I have not seen anythig in print about the sights history.

Yours has a round barrel and would be post-WWII production. The sight is fine but would not have shipped on that late a rifle.

The "29-S" option was available during most of the 29 with the checkered stocks and octagon barrel and all of the 29-A with octagon barrel production.

Given that only part of the 29/29-A's would have shipped with the 29-S option I would think the #30 tang sight was made in a very low quantity.

Thanks Rick, now I gotta find another gun for the collection. Just another reason I guess, condition is the hard part.

Actually, I think the guy I got that post war off had a pre-war in the same shape. I'll see if he's still got it.

I have seen one reference that thought the #30 sight was probably made by King. It does show more similarities to their sights than to Marbles or Lyman. I have never seen a 29S anywhere, what are your oppinions on the rarity? I did find a Ranger house brand with the 29S sights - the peep and the folding rear. Gene

Gotta have me one of those. I like the clip magazine type the best, but the tube mags are certainly alright:)

It is hard to tell how many 29-S's were sold. Maybe one in 10 or less? There are no records so we will never know. I think I have seen less than 10 of the #30's.

Ya, you did, I just dug up the old email. I grabbed the top 29 and the 1909 under it but ran outta cash for that 4th one down. The 1903 is easy to see why I passed.

I went and looked at this 29 again and have more info, it has an octagon barrel, the gun is tight, like its been shot very little. The wood is killer, except the small crack on the forend, the blue is great. I would rate this gun at 95%+

I have looked at gunbroker and all the other sites and just cannot find one like it.

Im having a hard time getting this dam gun out of my head, someone tell me mwhat its worth.

Thanks

PP

I think you referenced it as having a grooved forearm and octagon barrel. That would make it an earlier version 29. With a lot of conditon...$250-350. JMO
