Depends somewhat on the bullet itself, but if you keep O.A.L. at about 2.240 you'll be ok. You could get away with up to 2.250 with some bullets.

EvilTwin, the overall length should be 2.550", I'm sure you meant that but simply had a typo.

The Marlin 1895 45-70 can cycle loads of 2.55" reliably. Some rifles will accommodate somewhat longer rounds (perhaps 2.6") depending on the bullet's nose configuration. There are modifications to the cartridge carrier, bolt face and ejector that will allow reliable cycling of rounds up to 2.68" (McPherson, Precision Shooting, October 1998). Some gunsmiths offer modifications that will allow rounds of 2.73". David Clay modified an 1895 to accept a 50-110 Winchester (2.85") but could never get sufficient round cycling reliability to make it practical.
You learn something new everyday whether you want to or not.

Yep it wuz a typo. There definitely is a bullet profile that needs to be somewhat shorter as it is a Verrry blunt slug.

Jackfish, I wonder what an 1895 would be capable of if able to use, say, a Beartooth 525 Piledriver seated out to 2.7" oal.
You could use the extra space to either reduce pressure and possible feeding problems, or go for more velocity at the same pressure. Have you heard any details concerning this?
