Do any western states have minimum draw weight requirements for compounds?

Required or not, what do you consider a sensible minimum?

Utah is 40lbs. and a 7/16" cutting diameter broadhead. I personally feel that 60 lbs. should be a minimum with the heaviest arrow and broadhead that will shoot well. Light, fast arrows are fine for deer, but elk can and do shrug them off, especially if you hit bone...ribs included. I have seen fast stepping arrows enter nice bulls perfectly and deflect up or down on hitting a rib. The animals were lost. Having experienced this for myself also, I like heavy arrows and 1 1/4" cutting surfaces on my broadheads. I also like to shoot 70-80 lbs. Big bulls are tough to get pass through shots on and that extra bleeder hole is a must. There are always exceptions to the rule and people get lucky and kill them every year with 40 lb. bows, but why gamble with losing an animal. Flinch

John,
In Idaho the minimum is 40 lbs at 28". Further, let-off must be 65% or less, though there was a public meeting in the Fall seeking feedback on going to 70% to match the move by Pope & Young. Arrow weight is 400 gr minimum.

As to "sensible" minimum I've killed way more elk with a recurve than with a compound, in fact the only complete passthrough I recall was with a self fletched shaft with an old Bear Razorhead shot from a 62 lb Bighorn, but I did shoot for a shop in 3D competition and Hunting Advisory staff back in the early 80s and took quite a few bulls with a 64 lb Jennings Expert Hunter with 50% let-off/2016s/Savoras, a 73 lb Jennings Arrowstar with 30% let-off/2117s/Rocky Mountain Razors and a 72 lb Jennings T-Star with 50% let-off/2117s/RM Razors. I list all this nostalgia just to show that if this ancient gear (which many may have never even heard of, from back when Jennings was run by Tom, before the Bear deal) was more than adequate then ANY of the top gear of today with mid 60ish or more pull and the still great Easton shafts or the carbon composites along with Muzzy's any bull in sane distance should be trophy wall/freezer bound...

Ditto to what these guys have said. My compound is set for 67lbs and 75% letoff and with the propper broadhead I would surely feel comfortable. The hardest thing is getting them where it counts. OKH
