Pictures this:

A stainless 336 barreled action in the Sporter Carbine configuration with Boyd's laminated nutmeg wood, checkered of course. Perhaps ever integral scopes bases ala Ruger and an auxillary peep sight ala NECG; all stainless, all weather, all critters!

Man, you got me drooling all over my keyboard. I have decide that my next Marlin pursuit will be a 336ER .356W
Either that or pick up another 30-30 and have it converted to an AI.

Or, you could have Nonneman rechamber a 30-30 to 307 or a 35 to 356. A stainless 30-30 converted to 307 would be pretty nice. Not a 356, but not a rock or a club either.

I have an ER and they are mule kickers no doubt.
The 307 in a levergun is no slouch either. Darned near .308 ballistics. You can have a conversion done by Nonnemans either way for a total of $95.
It pays to get a used Marlin and do this just to have the caliber.

I have a 356 that Nonneman rechambered for me and I have been considering having him rechamber a 336SC from 30-30 to 307.

Make mine a 30-30 Ackley Improved . Our local Smith has done a few in our area with great results. Not only that but he just so happens to have an older Marlin he would sell and make the conversion. I wonder. Oh, I just love the 30-30 as is. Would be nice to find an older 356 at a gun show. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Why .307 &.356?

Go .308 & .358 (rimless) so you can use milsurp brass.

Brass for the .307 and .356 is not a problem. Both Graff and Midway have it now and if there is ever a shortage you can make it from .444 Marlin with one pass through a Redding form-trim die. In my experience rimless brass in the Winchester Big bore rifles makes them a two-shooter. Three rounds in the magazine puts enough tension on the magazine spring to cause the second round in the magazine to jump the cartridge stop on the link as the first round is lifted by the carrier. I do know how the rimless brass works in the Marlin ER.

I would sure like a Winchester in .307 with a pistol grip stock modeled after the old Model 64. Not going to happen though.

Are you kidding me? 95$ I just saw an older 336 35 rem at a gun show for 300$ canadian. I've been looking for a 356 winchester for about 2 years. Does anyone have this guys number?

Why not a 358?? components are much more easily obtained and a little more umph! than the 356? Would someone post nunemanns contact info? I would let him do one of my 35 rem. in 358 ? TIA RLB2

I don't know if he would rechamber to 358, but 358 brass works fine for reloading in my 356, if you keep the OAL and pressure to 356 levels.

If this Regan Nonneman's guy can covert to .356, why can't he convert it to .358?

Browning BLR make a .358 but I just can't get passed the looks of it compared to a Marlin 336.

I want a .358 as they make factory loads. Not being a hand loader this means a lot to me.

I spoke to Regan earlier this week. He is in the process of building a new shop, but is doing 4 or 5 307/356 conversions each week. He says the the current turn-around is about a month, so if you want 1 for this fall, you'd better get moving!

The BLR may not be pretty enough to dress up and take out on a date <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> but it is mechanically a better rifle than the Marlin, it is chambered for much higher pressure cartridges, with its huge rotating bolt. It can use spitzer bullets in its detachable box mag, its lever stroke is shorter, it only weights 6-1/2lbs (short action) has one of the best safeties ever invented (folding hammer) its receiver is clean with no protusions and its recoil pad does a great job taming the .358 win with 225gr and up bullets off the bench. Its trigger is even pretty decent, mine is shooting sub MOA, as i have always said, ugly is what ugly does. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

i think a 35 cal with poop for under or around $300 is just ok fine by me. if i could find blr's in 358 for that money then i wouldn't be sitting here <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

can i expect a 300fps increase in the 307 conversion with a 170?. if so can i expect a 200 yard gun when finished? (accuracy witholding of course)

The Winchester site shows the following velocity claims for their ammo:

307 with 180 grain PP, 2510 fps, -3.6" at 200 with 150 zero
30-30 with 170 grain PP, 2200 fps, -4.8" at 200 with 150 zero

356 with 200 grain PP, 2460 fps, -3.8" at 200 with 150 zero
35 with 200 grain PP, 2020 fps, -6.7" at 200 with 150 zero

I'd love to have a Marlin in .356!

With the price of 336ERs out of sight, a Nonneman conversion is clearly the fastest and cheapest way to go. I am eyeing a 336SC for conversion, so if I can make the deal happen my 336C will be for sale.

The .356 and .307 are definitely two of the most interesting and potentially useful new lever action cartridges that nobody wanted a rifle for. Why they were a commercial failure while the .300 WSM is a total success is a mystery to me. The .307 especially: .300 Savage ballistics in a slab-sided carbine? What's not to like?

To get back to the first post. I just got my 356 marlin stainless back from Mr.N, It was a limited edition 35rem ss guide gun they made 500 a little while ago.

I had it converted to 356win, had the safty removed and replaced with a pair of screw headed plugs, trigger job, model 71 rear sight, decelarator 1" pad, talley QR bases and rings and a tasco titan 1,25-4.5x26 scope. Sweet.

No laminate stock yet boyds does not make them. I found one at Brokmens, but they want 375$ for it. So it will stay with the walnut until some one comes up with an affordable one.
