I have a guy wanting to sell me a Remington 78 30-06 looking around they were made from 84-88. Why did they stop making them or what is wrong with them? Anyone got any info?

They were an econo version (hardwood stock ILO walnut, no checkering, etc) of the Model 788 - which was a prety accurate rifle, IIRC.
Both lines didn't last very long, as they weren't as popular/good sellers as the Model 700 line.

It has a rear locking bolt - not everbody's cup of tea.

I wouldn't expect to pay more for one than for any other cheap utility rifle in like condition.

i dont think anything was wrong with them basically a model 700 clone without a checkered bolt and installed in a birch stock they were also in the adl configuration.should make a fine rifle

definately not a rear lug action/ two front lugs

The 78 is a 700 ADL in every mechanical way except for the receiver stamp and the stock. I now have two 78's and a 700 and parts will interchange. The only thing wrong is lower resale to people who don't really know what it is. They have heard of the 700 but not the 78. That's a good thing when buying, though. grin

It is not a variation of the 788.

I have one in 243 Win. It is one of the most accurate, if not the most accurate rifle that I have. I did replacethe stock with a Remington Laminate stock.
Good luck,
g

Wouldn't be worth $450 to me. Mine was under $200 but it was over ten years ago.

The 3 78's I have bought in the last several years were all in the low $200's. Local shops are selling used walnut/blued 700 ADL's for $375-400, so $450 for a 78 with a low end Bushnell scope seems at least $150 too high.

A Sportsman 78 has front locking lugs just like a model 700.

There are two differences between a 700 ADL and the model 78.

The model 78 has a hardwood stock and the bolt is just plain, not engine turned.

I would not shy away from one at all particularly for a donor action.

Not sure if there is a differents or if they make two models or not. It is a Sportsman and found out the scope is a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40.

As previously stated, it is a plain Jane 700 with some corners cut. I personally would not pay more than 2/3 of the cost of an ADL for one. But I do think they are a good deal at a lower price. Remington built them to compete in the low end market after they discontinued the 788.

"Sportsman 78" is the full name.

I used one for a donor action to build a .338/06 it worked out great . I would have no problem using another one. I think $250.00 would be about my top dollar though, the scope I would have no interest in. I actually prefer the smooth bolt knob to the "checkered" one and aside from the wood (birch) I like the stock profile better than the ADL/BDL.
