I am looking for opinions of value on a Remington Model 788 in verg good condition. The caliber I understand is fairly rare in 7mm-08 with an 18 1/2" barrel. I checked GunsAmerica and Gun Broker and found one for $600 and another for $725. What do you think these rifles are worth?

Did these rifles sell for $600 or $725? That's the key..
Check back on completed auctions. That will be a better indicator.

I had one a while back, bought it for $275 if I recall. Now grant it that was a steal and it shot in one hole.

My opinion is that the fellas trying to get over 400 for these lil guns are plain crazy. Even if they can get it I say there friggin nutso!

I can't see the reason for paying $400 for one new in the box, unless you're a collector and need this to complete your collection. Nothing wrong with the gun, but really, why would you want one?

I had that exact rifle whne it first came out. I don't recall paying over 400 bucks. It too shot in one hole.

I bought this same rifle at a gunshow about 6 years ago,
for 400, if I remember correctly. I later sold it for what
I paid for it. They are around, you will pay more for this
caliber than the others, except for 30-30 and 44 magnum.
I think I have encountered 3 in the last few years.

we have one as well as 3 other 788's, we didnt pay over $200 for any of em, and all came from the same pawn shop. that 18 1/2" 7mm-08 sure is loud as hell though it is a proverbial one holer as are the others with a bedding job and a little trigger work

Kevin, These rifles go for anywhere between $400.00 to $500.00 used. You would have a hard time finding one for less than $400.00 used, never mind a new one in the box. They are one of the best shooting rifles and I've never seen one that's not a shooter.

I have one in 223 rem, that outshoots my 700, my model 70, and any of my Rugers. It has outshot custom built model 700's and custom model 70's.

I paid about $395.00 for mine back in 97. I have no regrets. It doesn't matter what some folks paid for them 20 years ago, right
now they go for a lot more than what they paid back in the days.

I've shot mine so much during the past ten years that I'm finally getting some wear on the barrel and I have to foul it a li'l bit before the groups get real tight and I now choose to re barrel it with a Lilja 26 inch barrel rather than buy a new one.
