Howdy
My 336/.35 has annoying issues. It appears that the carrier isn't staying up long enough or high enough in the chambering stage. Bullet noses and even case mouths have caught on the lower chamber edge, especially when levering slowly and quietly. It also scrtaches cartridges bullet to base sometime. What controls the carrier position and timing.?AW

Would this be a new 336 or a more experienced one ? Not that I can be of much help but it could be sharp edges on a new one or worn parts on an older one.

Howdy.
As far as I can tell, this rifle was only moderately used before it came to me. Never ran the numbers on it, but I believe it to be an unmodified mid 70's rifle. The only thing I have done to try and correct the issue of case scratching was to polish the rough spots on the carrier and inside the receiver and loading gate/port. It did have a lot of machine tool marks inside it.AW

Is the loading gate screw tight?
This is the screw directly inline and to the reat of the loading gate. These are known to loosen and jam up and mess with the carrier.
Worth a try anyhow.
I too get my brass scratched. I think I have finally tracked the source down to the loading gate. I think it is the inside forward edge of the receiver opening. Or possibly the edge of the loading gate itself. I have not yet taken a stone/file to smooth this area. Both of my 336's do this. One is a 2001 30-30 and the other 2003 35 Rem.
