A guy I know is trying to sell off a laminated (WITH GOLD MEDALLION IN STOCK) H&R single action in 30-06. It is like new with weaver base and a cheapie Simmons 8-point scope for $250. Is this a good price? What accuracy can I expect with good handloads? I also posted this in the single action rifle section.
Thank you.

Yea, it's a decent price considering it comes with scope and mounts and it's a decent rifle. I'm probably going to buy one this year. I was put in a situation were I needed to "loan" out a rifle twice last year. Everything worked out OK but if I had a cheap, reliable, accurate rifle I could use as a loaner I would enjoy my time in the woods more.

I think the H&R would fill this niche perfectly. I've owned a few through the years and never owned one that wouldn't do the job asked of it.

They are not bad rifles, I have one in .22 Hornet that I wouldn't part with. Used it just yesterday.

Hard to say on that one. I've got a H&R .45-70 that'll shoot MOA on occasion and I consider that great. I have another in .243 that my kids use and while I don't shoot groups with it, it seems to hit anything I point it at. I owned another in 17HMR that just didn't shoot very well at all.

The bright side is if it doesn't shoot well you can get a brand new barrel fitted to it for about $100! You can get a whole closet full of barrels for the thing and they're very cheap. I don't see how you could go wrong.

I have the heavy barreled .223 version and really like it. I was mainly looking for a knockabout rifle to keep in the truck for bustin yotes and such. I have had it for about 3 years now and have only tried one factory load in it because is shoots it pretty well. I shoot the Blackhills 52 gr hollowpoints, and it will put 5 shots right at an 1", sometimes dropping down to 3/4". Thats good enough for me.

I have one in 45/70 and 3006 and both shoot well.I have consitantly shot grouse with it at 25 yds with head/neck shots. The trigger is not slick but a good price and entirely serviceable rifle
Randy
PS Complete pass through with 165 gr Hornady at 2800 ft/sec...no bullet failures.

Well hell TC1, that old thing you had posted from 1952 would have made a good 'Cheap' loaner wouldn't it???

The one that got loaned out was my M70 300H&H. The guy I loaned it to could tear up a steel ball! eek

I wouldn't loan out a M/S to anyone that had never shot one before. The heavy firing pin spring requires a little practice to shoot good with.

I know what ya mean though, have a good friend that would bring you back an anvil in two pieces. Once in a while he wants to borrow a rifle and I just kind of cringe....in my mind I can picture him dragging it out of the trunk accross all of the junk without a case anywhere near it... you get the picture....

My Dad used to say never loan out two things. Your rifle or your wife.

I have never loaned out my wife.

Ah, I would have given him the rifle if he really needed it.

My Dad always said if you loan a friend your rifle you'll lose both the rifle and a friend. Not worth it.
