So I picked up a used marlin 30/30 for my son to deer hunt next year with. Then he will be 11 and before anybody says it kicks to hard for a little one. I will reload it a bit lighter for him and he has been shooting for four years now and has shot alot of centerfire rifles. The rifle had a Tasco 3-9 with over/under rings on it and I picked it up for 185.00. Then bought Leupold base and rings to replace the others. Next came the Nikon 3-9X40 scope to put on it. We will be headed out to the range on tuesday to give it a run through. Her are some pics of what he got.

Looks like a terrific choice for your son. Very nice condition too; I like the Marlins with the stock your's has - slightly larger swell in the forearm to grip well and without the checkering. Let him try the factory 30/30 rounds too, my son at the same age could handle my old 30/30 fine (and it had no scope to add weight and dampen recoil) - you just have to instuct him how to shoulder it right, which I know you will do. Fortunate son you have - he ought to be one happy boy.

Good choice...just picked up one of an earlier vintage for my son as well. If it were me, I'd switch to a rubber recoil pad for your son. It doesn't have to be anything fancy but the rubber is a better call IMO, not just for the shoulder but when you lean it up against something it won't slip (ask me how I know). Personally, I can't think of a more appropriate centerfire for a young lad than a 30-30...the fun factor is definitely up there and recoil isn't a worry. Deer aren't too fond of it either:)

Best thing you did was to get rid of the see-through mounts. Then mount a better scope.

My son also has a marlin 30-30 (he's 8) and he loves to shoot it. The recoil is not bad as some others out there IMO. He does use a bench or shooting sticks to help with the weight of the gun.

Your son will be well served with his "Dirty .30" Marlin rifle. Congrat's to both of you!

Tell him he will be able to kill about 95% of any critter over 50 lbs he might hunt with that gun!! (might save him some $$ in the long run...)Very nice gun and a very good choice!

We took it out shooting today and I was very proud of him. He was shooting it off hand and standing with full loads. He loved everything about it and was not to hard on him. Between him and his mom thew went through 60 rounds. BIG SMILES afterwards! I'm a very happy daddy!

Glad to see how well it worked for you. I got a 336W when I retired here in central Texas and use it all the time. While I love it here, I grew up in Hattiesburg and still miss those pine trees.
